Things nobody wants to admit about Virgin River
Since its premiere in December 2019, Virgin River has become one of the most popular and beloved Netflix original series. Based on the series of books by Robyn Carr, the romantic drama offers something a little more wholesome, but no less exciting, than the constant dream of dark shows on TV. It’s the absolute epitome of comfort television.
The series centers on Mel Monroe, a nurse practitioner and midwife who finds her way to the quaint and cozy Northern California small town of Virgin River. It’s a place where she finds community — and unexpected love — in a time she needs it most. Beyond Mel’s story of healing, the series also features a robust ensemble cast of relatable characters.
No matter how beloved any series might be, there are always some tough opinions we aren’t willing to admit. For this particular series, fans have joked about the slow-moving timeline that has kept Charmaine pregnant for five straight seasons, as well as some characters (Hope!) and relationships (Brie and Brady… or Mike?) that earn some healthy debate.
But it’s not all hot takes and complaints. Virgin River has very deservingly become a super-popular series across five seasons. Its streaming numbers are gargantuan, knocking the Suits renaissance from its chart-topping perch, and that’s no mistake. It’s time for the doubters to also finally admit the strengths that make the comfort show a small-screen sensation.
With a mix of constructive criticism and well-earned praise, we’re breaking down 10 things it’s time to talk about regarding the blockbuster Netflix series. Let’s not beat around the bush here and get right into the most pressing matter at hand: The glacial pace of the timeline.
