Netflix has tried its hand at producing a live-action adaptation of a popular Japanese manga series in the past, but it was ultimately an epic fail. Yes, we’re talking about you, Death Note… How did that popular song from Encanto go? “We don’t talk about Bruno, no, no, no!” Well, we don’t talk about the Death Note live-action adaptation either.

That’s why were initially put off by the news of Netflix making a One Piece live-action adaptation. The One Piece manga series and anime has many diehard fans, so there’s a lot of pressure on this adaptation to be good. Fingers crossed!

One Piece is set to arrive on Netflix on Thursday, Aug. 31, 2023, and you can expect all eight episodes to drop at once. Based on the hit manga series of the same name by Eiichiro Oda, Netflix’s One Piece follows young pirate Monkey D. Luffy as he and his ragtag crew embark on an epic journey to find the legendary fabled treasure so that he can finally become King of the Pirates.

Iñaki Godoy returns to Netflix to play the main character, Monkey D. Luffy. He previously starred in the short-lived Netflix series The Imperfects. Joining him in the cast are Mackenyu, Emily Rudd, Jacob Romero Gibson, Taz Skylar, and many others.
