Survival of the Thickest

A Netflix show we recommend checking out in July is the romantic comedy Survival of the Thickest. The first season consists of eight episodes that are about 25 minutes long each, so it’s an easy show to binge-watch. It’s scheduled to be released on July 13, so save the date!

Stand-up comedian and actress Michelle Buteau and TV writer-producer Danielle Sanchez-Witzel created the series for Netflix. They also serve as executive producers alongside Ravi Nandan and Alli Reich from A24.

Based on Buteau’s acclaimed book of comedic essays of the same name, Survival of the Thickest follows a plus-sized Black woman named Mavis Beaumont, who is newly single after a bad breakup. Mavis unexpectedly finds herself having to rebuild her life as a struggling stylist, but she’s determined to enjoy her life and make a name for herself in the fashion industry by any means necessary.

Buteau stars as the protagonist, Mavis Beaumont, a struggling NYC stylist. You might’ve watched her in the TV show First Wives Club or the movies Always Be My Maybe and Someone Great. She also hosts the popular Netflix reality series The Circle.

Tone Bell, Tasha Smith, Liza Treyger, Taylor Selé, Marouane Zotti, Anissa Felix, Garcelle Beauvais, and Anthony Michael Lopez join Buteau in the cast.
