In a surprise move, Netflix dropped the commercially successful psychological horror flick Get Out on its platform on Oct. 6. If you didn’t get to see it when it first came out in 2017, now is the perfect opportunity to do so. But before you start watching this gripping film on Netflix, we must share with you the age rating and parents guide.

Directed by Jordan Peele in his directorial debut, Get Out follows a young black photographer named Chris who goes on a weekend getaway with his white girlfriend to meet her parents for the first time. But once Chris meets them and the rest of the neighborhood, he immediately senses that something is amiss. He grows increasingly uncomfortable during the visit and starts to suspect that something sinister is going on. What he thought would be a typical awkward first meeting of parents quickly turns into a fight for survival.

Daniel Kaluuya stars in the leading role as Chris Washington while Allison Williams plays the role of Rose, Chris’s girlfriend. Bradley Whitford, Caleb Landry Jones, Stephen Root, Catherine Keener, LaKeith Stanfield, Lil Rel Howery, Keegan-Michael Key, Betty Gabriel, and others also star in the film.

What is Get Out rated?

The horror film is rated R, meaning it may be inappropriate for ages under 17. It was given this age rating for graphic violence, bloody images, strong language, and sexual references. This type of content is obviously not meant for young kids to be watching, so we recommend watching this film when they’re not around.

Although it’s labeled as a horror movie, we wouldn’t necessarily say it’s scary. In fact, we’d say it’s more of a psychological thriller than a horror. There are a couple of jump scares, and it’s mildly creepy, but it’s more suspenseful and tense than scary. It might be scary to a younger audience, but to anyone over the age of 17, you’d probably think differently.

Here’s a list of scenes in the film that many parents would deem inappropriate for kids to be watching:

  • A man is choked until he’s unconscious by a masked person.
  • Curse words such as f*cking, b*tch, motherf*cking, motherf*cker, sh*t, and f*ck are used.
  • Smoking use
  • A car hits a deer, and the deer is thrown into the woods.
  • A deer is shown bleeding to death in the woods.
  • Some kissing, but nothing explicit
  • A man starts bleeding from his nose and has a mental breakdown.
  • A man is shown slicing open the top of another’s man head and then placing it in the trash. You can briefly see the man’s brain.
  • A man hits another man over the head twice with a hard ball.
  • A man uses a deer head wall decoration to stab and kill another man. Blood is shown spurting out of his mouth and down his neck.
  • A woman stabs another man in the hand with a knife.
  • A man stabs another man in the leg with a sharp object. He then stomps on the man until he dies.
  • A man in a car runs over a woman. He puts in her his car, but they end up getting into a car accident that kills the woman.
  • A man shoots a woman with a gun and then shoots himself in the head.
  • A man chokes another woman.

It’s worth mentioning that there’s no nudity in this movie, though.
