Crimson Peak
Crimson Peak is a lush and gorgeous gothic romance movie from director Guillermo del Toro starring Mia Wasikowska, Jessica Chastain, Tom Hiddleston, and Charlie Hunnam. While it’s not necessarily super scary, the vibes are immaculate, especially if you’re like me and you can’t get enough gothic stuff. The production design alone is *chef’s kiss,* not to be missed.
The reviews for the movie were mixed, but honestly, I think if you go into the film anticipating a gothic romance with some creepy vibes rather than a traditional horror movie, you’ll enjoy it way more. It’s kind of similar to the discourse generated by the recent vampire gothic romance film The Invitation, which is more of a romance than straight horror, too.
Crimson Peak is about a young woman named Edith (Wasikowska) who is seduced by the enchanting Sir Thomas Sharpe (Hiddleston). Thomas takes Edith to a remote manor nestled in the English hills, and there she meets his sister, Lady Lucille (Chastain).
While living in the mansion, Edith starts to see strange ghosts and specters haunting the halls and realizes something dark, mysterious, and potentially horrifying is hidden beneath the opulent facade of her new home.
