Ouija: Origin of Evil
If you are a fan of other Mike Flanagan projects like The Haunting of Hill House, Oculus, Doctor Sleep, or Midnight Mass, then Ouija: Origin of Evil should be on your radar.
This 2016 film is criminally underrated, although that might be due to the previous movie in the franchise. The 2014 Ouija was not a good movie, and when people heard the 2016 film was going to be a prequel to that one, many wrote it off. But the two movies are very loosely connected, and you can easily watch Origin of Evil while skipping Ouija.
Origin of Evil is a period horror film taking place in 1967 Los Angeles and featuring many actors who frequent Flanagan’s projects, like his wife Kate Siegel, Lulu Wilson, Annalise Basso, and Elizabeth Reaser. Reaser stars as young widow Alice Zander living in the suburbs who runs a scam séance/fortune-telling business with the assistance of her daughters Paulina (Basso) and Doris (Wilson).
Alice later introduces an ouija board into her “act” to create stunts that will make customers think she’s the real deal, but in the process, she unwittingly invites an evil presence into her home. The malevolent entity takes possession of Doris and begins terrorizing the family.
