Choose or Die

Choose or Die was one of the few horror movies released on Netflix in 2022. This British thriller directed by Toby Meakins stars Sex Education‘s Asa Butterfield and Iola Evans.

Evans and Butterfield play friends Kayla and Isaac, who discover an old text-based video game from the 1980s called CURS>R. When they learn the game has an unclaimed cash prize, the duo is prepared to play it and walk away rich. Kayla, a coder, thinks it’ll be easy money. Unfortunately, it quickly becomes apparent why no one has ever won the cash prize.

CURS>R has the ability to warp reality, forcing players to choose between horrifying options or pay the price. And the game is boundless in that it’s not always just the players affected but unwitting passersby or people unlucky enough to be in the vicinity, as an unfortunate waitress learns early on in the movie.

Choose or Die doesn’t necessarily reinvent the wheel, but it’s a fast-paced thriller with some mean twists. It also features a fun voice cameo from horror icon Robert Englund.

With a short runtime of around 85 minutes, the film doesn’t overstay its welcome, though it does struggle to justify its existence and ends up being rather forgettable. Choose or Die isn’t the worst way to spend an evening, but there are better Halloween movies on Netflix if you are pressed for time.
