The Midnight Club

Based on the works of YA author Christopher Pike, The Midnight Club marks horror filmmaker Mike Flanagan’s latest project, though it is targeted at a younger audience than his previous works.

The Midnight Club follows protagonist Ilonka as she learns she has a terminal disease and doesn’t have much time to live. She decides she wants to move into a hospice facility for young people called Brightcliffe Home, where she meets other patients her age and deals with her new normal. Each night, the group of young adults gathers to tell scary stories, and we get to see many of those play out in the show.

The Netflix show has the honor of breaking a major record, which is pretty awesome. It now holds the Guinness World Record for most jump scares in one single scripted episode.

The cast includes a crew of frequent Flanagan collaborators, including Samantha Sloyan, Zach Gilford, Igby Rigney, Annarah Cymone, Matt Biedel, and others. Ilonka is portrayed by Iman Benson, plus horror legend Heather Langenkamp plays a doctor who runs the hospice.

The Midnight Club might be worth watching if you’re a fan of Flanagan’s. However, many agree that the show is not Flangan’s best, so if you’re pressed for time this year, don’t feel too bad skipping this one in favor of some of his other shows, like the upcoming Fall of the House of Usher.
