Tick, Tick… BOOM!
Andrew Garfield fans would be remiss to skip over his acclaimed 2021 musical biographical film Tick, Tick… Boom!. Not only did it earn Garfield a Golden Globe Award but he also received an Academy Award nomination for his inspiring performance as the legendary lyricist and playwright Jonathan Larson, who won a posthumous Pulitzer Prize (and three Tony Awards) for his musical theater masterpiece, Rent.
Tick, Tick… Boom! is inspired by Larson’s semi-autobiographical play of the same name and the movie marks the feature directorial debut of Hamilton’s Lin Manuel-Miranda.
Larson’s Tick, Tick… Boom! to delves into the intense pressure he felt to achieve greatness before turning 30, to dissect that overwhelming feeling we all get when it seems like time is running out.
The story is about a young Larson’s passion project: writing a stellar musical that will carve out a place for him within the theater industry. Part of the movie’s charm is its meta ability to pull back the curtain on an artist’s creative process. Given the description and the real-life context, you can see where the meta angle comes in.
