When it comes to adapting iconic anime titles for live-action, Netflix hasn’t exactly had the best track record. In fact, no studio has really had success in adapting the iconic genre for live-action projects.

So when Netflix announced it was doing a live-action show based on One Piece, fans were skeptical and didn’t have the highest of hopes. Then came the show’s first season.

One Piece season 1 has been a smashing success for Netflix, becoming a global phenomenon that has been praised by fans of the anime that inspired it. Just as The Last of Us broke the curse of video game TV adaptations, One Piece finally brought an end to the curse that has long plagued live-action anime adaptations.

Is One Piece season 2 happening?

Following the success of One Piece‘s debut season, the expectation is that Netflix is going to renew the show for a second season; however, a formal renewal has not yet been announced by Netflix.

While Netflix has not yet renewed the show, it seems the groundwork for season 2 has already been laid as the CEO of the studio behind the series has revealed scripts for season 2 are already complete! In fact, he’s pretty sure they’ll be hearing from Netflix very soon and that a renewal announcement is forthcoming.

"“I think [Netflix is] looking at various situations about how many episodes they do, do they break them up?” Marty Adelstein, CEO of Tomorrow Studios, revealed in an interview with Variety. “I think they’re trying to figure that out this week. I suspect we’ll hear from them in the next week to two weeks. There seems to be a big impetus to keep this going and to come up with a long-term strategy. So we’re just waiting for that.”"

One Piece season 2 release date predictions

If you enjoyed the first season of One Piece, you’re likely wondering when a second season might be coming. A formal renewal is expected to come through from Netflix and work is already being done on One Piece season 2 with scripts for the second season already ready to go. That’s the good news. The bad news is that it’s going to take 12-18 months once cameras start rolling for season 2 to arrive.

According to Tomorrow Studios CEO Marty Adelstein, if they move quickly, a second season could be ready to go within 12-18 months once the strikes are over and production is able to begin.

The good news is that means there is a possibility that season 2 could be coming in late 2024; however, if the strikes run long there is a chance fans could have to wait until 2025 for the next season to arrive.

It’s also important to note that Adelstein said the season could be ready within 12-18 months once production begins. This means that even if the strikes conclude before 2023 comes to a close, there is a strong chance we might not get season 2 until early 2025 as 18 months from October 2023 would be February 2025.

We’ll have to wait to see how things go, but it seems we’re in for a long wait until season 2 of One Piece which is disappointing as we’re already eager for new episodes of the show!
