Actor, filmmaker, and stand-up comedian Bill Burr will soon make his feature directorial debut with the Netflix comedy Old Dads. This R-rated movie co-stars Bobby Cannavale and Bokeem Woodbine as a trio of best friends (and dads) who feel like they’re always a step behind the latest trends.

Burr and Netflix have a long history together as many of Burr’s stand-up specials are available on the streaming service and he also created, co-wrote, and voiced the lead role of Frank Murphy in Netflix’s adult animated comedy series F is For Family.

His latest film has been in the works since at least 2020 and will be produced by Miramax and Burr’s production company All Things Comedy. Keep reading to find out everything we know about Old Dads on Netflix.

When is Bill Burr’s new movie Old Dads coming to Netflix?

Old Dads will premiere on Netflix on Friday, October 20 at 3:00 a.m. EST. Netflix announced the movie’s release date and info in August of this year.

Old Dads plot synopsis

There isn’t a lot to share about the movie’s plot yet beyond that it’s a comedy following three dads who sell their company to a new CEO and find themselves feeling a step out of time. Throughout the movie, the three dads, per Netflix, “will find themselves battling preschool principals, millennial CEOs, and anything created after 1987.”

It’ll be interesting to see if Old Dads is successful or not because the plot synopsis makes it sound a tiny bit “old man yells at clouds,” which can be funny or it can be super cringe. But I’ll give Burr the benefit of the doubt and withhold any judgment until I see the movie (or at least a trailer). We also know that Bill Burr co-wrote the script with Ben Tishler, so if you’re a fan of Burr’s comedy, odds are, you’ll enjoy this movie.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Old Dads is “semi-autobiographical.” Burr and Tishler were inspired by their experience of becoming fathers later in life.

Echoing my previous sentiments about the film’s script reflecting Burr’s personal sense of humor, one of the film’s producers, Mike Bertolina, told THR that the movie is “Bill’s stand-up in a narrative format. You see this progression in him as he’s working on his own issues — most centered around his anger.”

Old Dads cast and crew

In addition to directing and co-writing the screenplay, Burr is also a producer on the film alongside his co-writer Ben Tishler, Monica Levinson, Bill Block, and Mike Bertolina. Burr himself stars alongside Bobby Cannavale and Fargo star Bokeem Woodbine. They’re joined by cast members like Lucifer‘s Rachael Harris and Legion star Katie Aselton.

Here’s the cast list for Old Dads so far:

  • Bill Burr as Jack
  • Bobby Cannavale as Connor
  • Bokeem Woodbine as Mike
  • Katie Aselton as Jack’s wife, Leah
  • Reign Edwards as Britney, Mike’s girlfriend
  • Rachael Harris
  • Miles Robbins
  • Jackie Tohn
  • Katrina Bowden
  • Natasha Leggero

Is there an Old Dads trailer?

Not yet! Since Old Dads isn’t releasing until October, Netflix probably won’t share an official teaser or trailer until late September.

We’re still more than a month away from Old Dads premiering on Netflix, but you can set a reminder on Netflix to receive a notification when it becomes available.
