3. They Cloned Tyrone

This surreal sci-fi caper film is easily one of the best Netflix movies released this year. Marking the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Juel Taylor, who also co-wrote the script alongside Tony Rettenmaier, They Cloned Tyrone is a delightful romp featuring charismatic performances from its three leads.

The movie centers on an unlikely trio featuring a pimp, a drug dealer, and a sex worker who stumble upon a strange cloning conspiracy in their neighborhood. It begins with a drug dealer named Fontaine (John Boyega) who gets into an altercation with a pimp named Slick Charles (Jamie Foxx). This sets off a chain reaction and ultimately leads to a horrifying discovery.

Unfortunately, Netflix opted to release this film on the same weekend Barbie opened in theaters, so it ended up getting a little overshadowed. I think more people will discover it in the coming months when conversations circle back to the best movies of the year, but even if you have seen it already, it’s worth a second watch.

They Cloned Tyrone is not only hilarious but sharply written and very smart. You’ll be surprised by how many subtle nods and foreshadowing are present that you might not catch during your first viewing.
