XO, Kitty season 2 renewal
On June 14, 2023, Netflix renewed the teen series for a second season! The streaming giant decided to announce the show’s renewal through its official Twitter page by sharing a cute 36-second video of some of the cast announcing the good news.
In the video, the cast is shown passing a piece of paper around until it reaches the leading star, Anna Cathcart. She turns the paper around and it says, “XO, Kitty season 2 is coming.” The video ends with Cathcart thanking the fans for helping make a second season happen by streaming the first season.
XO, Kitty season 1 managed to pull in 72.08 million hours viewed following its May 18 debut, ranking at the No. 2 spot on the English TV List. It even appeared in the Top 10 in 90 countries. On the show’s second week on Netflix (May 22-28), it accumulated 63.78 million hours viewed and remained in the top 10.
For the third week (May 29-June 4), XO, Kitty season 1 garnered 29.83 million hours viewed and once again remained in the global top 10. For the fourth week (June 5-June 11), the first season accumulated 14.46 million hours viewed. So for the show’s first month on the streamer, it pulled in a total of 180.15 million hours viewed.
What is the teen series about?
XO, Kitty is a spin-off series to the popular To All the Boys film trilogy. It made Netflix history as the first Netflix original series to be spun off from a Netflix original movie.
The New York Times best-selling author Jenny Han is the creative genius behind the show. It follows the fan-favorite character from the To All the Boys movies, Kitty Song Covey, and her journey to find true love.
Her journey takes her to Seoul, South Korea, at an international boarding school called KISS. While there, she’s reunited with her long-distance boyfriend Dae, and meets a bunch of other students attending the school. Although Kitty hopes to be reconnected with Dae and learn more about her late mother’s life, things don’t quite turn out how Kitty had planned.
There is only one season of the teen series so far, and it’s available to stream on Netflix right now. The first season consists of 10 episodes in total with each episode being in the 20 to 30-minute range.
Production on XO, Kitty season 2 wrapped
Calling all XO, Kitty fans! Filming has wrapped on the second season. Anna Cathcart, who plays Kitty in the teen series, shared this good news via an Instagram post on June 21, 2024. Now, the new episodes should have entered the next stage of the filmmaking process, which is post-production. This is where the episodes will be edited to perfection before they're ready for viewing.
Our previous report is below.
On April 25, 2024, the cameras officially started rolling on XO, Kitty season 2. Netflix announced the good news via a post on X. The post includes a video of some of the cast posing together in front of what looks like a school in their KISS outfits. Could the school be KISS? We believe so! Check out the video below.
In the video, you can see Anna Cathcart (Kitty) Choi Min-young (Dae), Gia Kim (Yuri), Sang Heon Lee (Min-ho), Anthony Keyvan (Q), Regan Aliyah (Juliana), and what looks to be three new cast members. Who are they and what characters will they be playing? We go more in depth on this later in the article, so make sure to keep reading.
As reported by What's On Netflix, principal photography on the second season will reportedly run through to June 2024. However, it's important to mention that this is a rumored production end date. Netflix nor the creative team behind XO, Kitty have confirmed this date, so we'll have to take this with a grain of salt. We'll get back to you once we have confirmation that filming has officially ended on the second season.
XO, Kitty season 1 ending explained
After Kitty is expelled from KISS for secretly staying in the boys’ dorm, she packs up all her things and gets on a plane back to her home in Portland, Oregon. She doesn’t end up with any of her love interests in the season (Dae, Yuri, and Min Ho). In fact, she ends the season single.
Kitty and Dae officially break up right before she gets on her plane. After Kitty breaks up with Dae, she bumps into Yuri at the airport. As she’s about to express her feelings to Yuri, Juliana shows up and interrupts her. So, she never gets to tell Yuri that she likes her as more than a friend.
Once Kitty sits in her seat on the plane, she notices that Min Ho is sitting next to her. She tells him that she and Dae broke up and then Min Ho sees this as the perfect opportunity to express his feelings. He tells Kitty that he might be in love with her, but Kitty doesn’t say anything back.
Kitty had no idea that Min Ho had feelings for her, so this came as a surprise. But based on the slight smirk she has after Min Ho confesses his feelings, she might start to see him in a different light going forward.
Here are some other things that happened in season 1:
- Q and Florian end up together but are not on good terms. Q didn’t like that Florian cheated on his finals.
- Alex finds out that his birth parents are Principal Jina Lim and Professor Lee.
- Jina Lim and Eve Song (Kitty’s mom) were good friends when they were teens. Eve let Jina use her name at the hospital when she was pregnant with Alex to hide her pregnancy.
- Professor Lee had no idea that he had a kid until Jina tells him in episode 10.
- Kitty comes to South Korea for Dae but finds herself developing feelings for a girl (Yuri). Although Kitty doesn’t label her sexuality in the first season, series creator Jenny Han confirmed that Kitty is bisexual.
- Yuri comes out as gay to Dae, Kitty, Q, and then her mom. She and Juliana were also in a secret relationship. They end up together at the end of the first season.
- Kitty and Alex are not related.
- Kitty finds out that her mom had a previous lover named Simon before she met her dad.
What could the second season be about?
Kitty is headed back to Portland at the end of the first season. Obviously, she can’t stay in Portland forever and will eventually make her way back to Seoul, South Korea. Remember, Yuri makes a call to her mom and tells her to not expel Kitty in the season 1 finale. Since Yuri and her mom are finally on good terms, I’m sure Jina will do anything to stay in her daughter’s good graces. So, we’ll most likely see Kitty return to KISS for the next semester of school.
But how will Kitty face Yuri now that Juliana is back? She never got to tell Yuri how she felt, so it’s definitely going to be hard for her to watch Yuri and Juliana be all lovey-dovey. Will Kitty eventually tell Yuri that she likes her? Could Yuri have feelings for Kitty as well? What about Dae? Dae is Kitty’s first love, and although Kitty is more interested in Yuri at the moment, I doubt she’s completely over Dae. It’s obvious that Dae still wants to be with Kitty, so maybe he’ll try to win her back in the second season.
Kitty now knows that Min Ho has feelings for her. Will she eventually fall for him and start a relationship with him? There will definitely be drama if this does happen since Min Ho is one of Dae’s closest friends. Q and Florian have some things to work out in their relationship too since trust has been broken.
Now that the identity of Alex’s birth parents has been revealed, the second season could also explore the dynamics between Jina, Professor Lee, Alex, and Yuri. Maybe we could also learn more about the other characters’ backstories. There’s so much that can be explored in a second season. We can’t wait to see what the writers come up with.
Cast
Although the show has been renewed, an official cast list hasn’t been released yet. However, we have an idea of who could return in the second season.
Obviously, Anna Cathcart will reprise her role as Kitty Song Covey since the show is about her. Actually, pretty much all of the cast from season 1 would most likely come back for the second season.
Here’s who we believe could return in XO, Kitty season 2:
- Anna Cathcart as Kitty Song Covey
- Choi Min-young as Dae
- Anthony Keyvan as Q
- Gia Kim as Yuri
- Sang Heon Lee as Min Ho
- Peter Thurnwald as Alex
- Regan Aliyah as Juliana
- Yunjin Kim as Jina
- Michael K. Lee as Professor Lee
- Jocelyn Shelfo as Madison
- Théo Augier Bonaventure as Florian
- Lee Sung-wook as Mr. Kim (Dae’s dad)
- Lee Hyung-chul as Mr. Han (Yuri’s dad)
- Sunny Oh as Mihee
- Ryu Han-bi as Eunice
- John Corbett as Dan Covey
- Sarayu Blue as Trina
Since Anna Cathcart, Choi Min-young, Anthony Keyvan, Gia Kim, and Sang Heon Lee appear in the renewal video, they’re pretty much confirmed to be coming back for the second season. Also, Regan Aliyah was featured in the video about production starting on season 2, so she's confirmed to be returning as well.
When it comes to the three new cast members who were also featured in the video about production starting, their names are Audrey Huynh, Sasha Bhasin, and Joshua Lee. Huynh is set as a series regular for season 2 and will be playing a character named Stella, while Bhasin and Lee are recurring cast members playing the roles of Preveena and Jin.
According to What's on Netflix, the casting department was casting for three new characters this season. First, they were looking for an actor to play a character named Sophie. She's described as a Korean-American teen from Ohio who is a last-minute transfer to K.I.S.S. on an exchange program through her Korean church. I wonder if she and Kitty will get along.
Then, they were looking for an actor to play a character named Mr. Choi. He's described as a handsome but also charming narcissist who is a big talent manager funding a new arts program at K.I.S.S. Lastly, the casting department was casting for an actor to play a character named Young. He's described as queer, competitive, and a main rival to one of the show's main characters. He'll be competing to become captain of the track team in XO, Kitty season 2.
