Take Care of Maya

This documentary might be one of the most infuriating and heart-wrenching films you watch all year. Beata and John Kowalski had no idea what was in store for their family when they brought their 10-year-old daughter Maya to Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital in 2016.

After years spent battling Maya’s rare illness and chronic pain, her parents believed the hospital could assist them. Still, when staff members began doubting Maya’s pain and pushing back against her family’s treatment options, Maya’s parents soon found themselves separated from their daughter, with Maya taken into state custody.

The medical team separated Maya from her loved ones as they pressed her for details on her disease. Unfortunately, Maya’s case is not an anomaly. This documentary shines a light on severe issues in children’s healthcare. The story is over, as Maya and her family are going to trial in a case against the Florida hospital, which they’ve accused of false imprisonment.

If you’re interested in this story, you’ll want to check out this documentary soon. The trial will begin in September 2023. Honestly, Take Care of Maya has so many shocking turns and devastating moments that it can be a complicated watch, but it’s undoubtedly essential.
