Everything we know so far about Extraction 3

It’s been a long time since we learned anything new about Extraction 3 after it was announced at TUDUM 2023 by Chris Hemsworth and Sam Hargrave. Scott Stuber, Netflix’s Head of Film, recently spoke with Collider about the state of the film, if it’s happening, and what’s next.

The good news is Extraction 3 is still in the works, according to Collider, but there’s not-so-good news, too. Stuber told Collider that Extraction 3 “lost some momentum” due to the writers’ and actors’ strike. Stuber also mentioned that the script isn’t finished and the actors have not signed on for Extraction 3 yet, likely due to the strikes. Luckily, the writers’ strike ended in late September, and the actors’ strike just ended on Wednesday, Nov. 8. Hopefully, that means the work on Extraction 3 will get cracking soon!

Here’s a breakdown of why Extraction 3 is not officially on the Netflix calendar yet, via Collider:

"“You know, you’ve got to find the right thing. I think the second one was so good because it was emotional and complex. It kind of reminds me of when I worked on the Bourne movies. Tony Gilroy did such a good job on the second one of making it emotional and making that kind of activate around Franka [Potente’s] death. So, this one had the same kind of familial background around Chris [Hemsworth’s] motivation. Getting Idris [Elba] into the franchise was an interesting way to kind of evolve it. So we’re waiting on the script and working hard, but aspiration would be great to get it back. I mean, what those guys have done has been really great in that franchise.”"

Extraction 2 premiered on Netflix on June 16, 2023. The film ranks No. 10 on the all-time list of the most popular Netflix movies, right behind the first movie of the franchise, which premiered on Netflix in April 2020.

Extraction 2 ending

At the end of Extraction 2, it’s very clear what’s happening. Sam Hargrave, Netflix, Chris Hemsworth, the Russo Brothers, and everyone involved with this project are setting up fans for Extraction 3.

Unlike the end of the first movie, Tyler Rake is very clearly alive. There was a lot of debate if Tyler Rake was dead or not after the first movie. That’s not the case here. He’s alive, and he has another job to do, at least that’s what the character played by Idris Elba tells Tyler at the end of the movie.

Tyler, who is being held at an Austrian prison, says he’s not doing any more jobs without Nik, and that’s when she appears. It looks like it’s go-time on Extraction 3!

Director Sam Hargrave told Decider, “There’s definitely an appetite for a third movie.” He also added:

"“I know AGBO has spoken of it, Netflix has mentioned they’d be excited to do it, and Hemsworth loves playing the character,” Hargrave told Decider. “I definitely have a bunch of ideas bouncing around up in this brain of mine.”"

According to Brobible, Hargrave also said that there’s a story in the works for the third movie and Hemsworth is down to return for Extraction 3. 

"“He is taking a step back to spend more time with family because he is a family man and that’s very important to him, and enjoy the life that he’s earned. But the desire to take this character as far as it can go, and the fact that he has a franchise outside of the Marvel universe I think are two things that are very enticing to Chris.“Because to be heading a franchise that has the emotional core and depth that Tyler Rake does, and still have this globe-trotting, action grittiness to it — I think those are two pretty cool characteristics and I think he recognizes that. So when we spoke, yes, he said he would be interested in perhaps reprising the role.”"

Has Netflix announced the Extraction 3 release date?

Not yet! We’re still a long time away from the Extraction 3 release date, so we know that Netflix is not going to announce the news for a while, likely a few months before the release.

Extraction 3 could, in theory, be released sometime in 2025 or 2026, but there are a lot of things that have to happen. That’s probably the earliest it could be released. We’ve seen two-year gaps between Netflix original movie sequels in the past, but based on what’s happened lately with the COVID-19 pandemic, the writers’ strike, and actors’ strike, a 2026 release date seems more likely.

Given what Stuber said about the third film, it’s going to be at least 2025 or 2026 before Extraction 3 hits Netflix. The movie isn’t on Netflix’s slate yet, but hopefully, the details will be ironed out soon now that the actors’ strike is over and they can get back to work soon.

Release Prediction: Late 2025

Cast

We’re going to see a lot of familiar faces in the cast of the third movie. There’s no way the franchise would continue without Chris Hemsworth as Tyler Rake. We also have a good feeling about Golshifteh Farahani returning as Nik Khan. Idris Elba will almost certainly be back for the third movie.

Unfortunately, we will likely be without Adam Bessa a Yaz Khan in the third movie. Unless he’s brought back from the dead like Tyler Rake in the first movie, Yaz likely won’t be in Extraction 3. 

There are definitely going to be more than a few new cast members in Extraction 3. There always is in every movie like this. Stay tuned for more news about the cast.

Possible storylines for Extraction 3

While Extraction 2 was its own story, it also set up a lot of what we’ll see in Extraction 3, assuming the creative team gets to tell the story like they’re planning to do.

The first movie introduced the world to this enigmatic and almost mythical figure, Tyler Rake, and then we started to peel back the layers of who he is and what motivates him. A lot of that is how he lost his son, and that’s why he continues to sacrifice everything for Ovi.

In the second movie, Tyler is processing everything that the events of the first movie brought up with his son. He comes, I think, to some level of peace in the sequel after apologizing to his ex-wife.

We also see Tyler withhold information to his partner, Nik, about the mission, which he sees cause some tension in the middle of the movie. It’s not fully addressed or resolved. Then, Nik’s best friend and brother, Yaz, is killed by Zurab near the end of the movie.

Then, Tyler and Nik got separated in different prisons, and we don’t get to see how Yaz’s death impacts their relationship. Yes, Nik does return to save Tyler and almost dies, but there’s bound to be some friction there.

We also know that Idris Elba’s character has a job for Tyler Rake and Nik Khan to do in the next movie. He hints that his boss is a “gnarly mother******”, which seems to set up that introduction in Extraction 3.

Extraction is definitely positioned well to become Netflix’s next big action franchise. It’s not an action comedy like some of the other popular Netflix movies, like Red Notice. It’s easy to see how Tyler Rake could become on the same level of action hero as a John Wick. I mean, it’s going to be a hard path to get that popular, but it’s definitely possible that Tyler Rake could reach those heights.
