Adam Brody and Leighton Meester’s new movie River Wild headed to Netflix in August

One of the internet’s favorite low-key celebrity couples has a new movie out, and it’s coming to Netflix this August! The OC alum Adam Brody and Blair Waldorf herself, Leighton Meester co-star in the thrilling adventure film River Wild, which also features Meester’s co-star Taran Killam from the criminally underrated sitcom Single Parents.

River Wild got a direct-to-digital release, and we’re excited to check out the film when it comes to Netflix. The streamer should help the movie get much wider recognition than if it were released solely through digital retailers.

Entertainment Weekly spoke with the cast, revealing that the film was shot in beautiful locations like Bosnia, Hungary, and Slovakia. Thankfully, we won’t have to wait much longer to watch! Here’s everything you need to know about River Wild.

What is River Wild about?

Killam and Meester play siblings Gray and Joey, who embark on a thrilling white-water river rafting experience alongside their childhood friend Trevor (Brody) and a couple of tourists. But what starts as an adrenaline-inducing adventure soon turns into a nightmare-fueled escapade as the group becomes stranded and they realize someone is hunting them.

Here is the official synopsis shared by EW:

"Per the official synopsis, once the group become stranded in raging rapids, the thrill-seeking trip quickly turns from exciting to utterly terrifying as the rafters are trapped in a desperate fight for their lives, all while someone seems intent on sabotage to ensure shocking secrets stay buried. To survive the wild river, Joey will have to face her fears, and everyone will have to develop killer instincts before they’re torn apart by deception aboard the raft, or by deadly waters wreaking havoc all around them."

Is River Wild based on a true story?

River Wild isn’t based on a true story, but it is a reimagining of the 1994 film of the same name starring Meryl Streep and Kevin Bacon.

While chatting with EW, Killam praised director Ben Ketai for his reinterpretation of the 1990s movie:

"“All of the drama in the original arises from circumstance. They happen upon the bad guys,” he says. “In our movie, the danger comes from within the group. The drama comes out of the existing tension between the characters. [It’s] a more intimate and gritty story, but in the same exciting setting as the original.”"
