Were you wondering why most of the characters talk with a Southern accent? Well, it’s because the show is set in the Deep South. It’s set in the fictional small town of Serenity, South Carolina. So, no, Serenity is not a real town. However, you can visit the filming location that doubles as the charming town.

Get ready to be amazed. I know we said Serenity isn’t a real place, but obviously, South Carolina is. However, Sweet Magnolias isn’t filmed in this Southern state. It’s actually primarily filmed in the Southern state of Georgia. More specifically, Covington, Georgia.

A lot of scenes are shot in Covington. For example, Sullivan’s Restaurant, the restaurant owned by Dana Sue, is actually a real restaurant you can visit and eat at in Covington, Georgia. However, the restaurant’s real name is “Mystic Grill.” It was also featured in the popular supernatural teen drama series The Vampire Diaries.

According to This Is My South, the exterior shots of the Corner Spa in Sweet Magnolias are actually of a law office located in Covington. The interiors were filmed on a soundstage. If you were wondering what clock tower building is featured in the opening of the show and sometimes in the background of scenes, it’s the Newton County Courthouse located in Covington, Georgia. Many scenes are also shot in Downtown Covington.

Scenes taking place in Serenity High School are actually filmed at Henry County Middle School in McDonough, Georgia. Also, the scenes taking place in the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church are shot at the Oakhurst Presbyterian Church in Decatur, Georgia. While Maddie and Dana Sue’s houses in the show are located in Covington, Helen’s blue house is located in Atlanta, Georgia.

As reported by Atlas of Wonders, the Forager Festival in episode 3 of the third season was shot in Madison Town Park in Madison, Georgia. In the third season, scenes were also shot at the Porter Memorial Gymnasium in Porterdale, Georgia.

What city inspired Serenity?

As we mentioned earlier, Serenity is not a real town. However, the author of the Sweet Magnolias books, Sherryl Woods, revealed that Serenity was inspired by Sumter, South Carolina. She used to travel to Sumter every summer to see an old family friend.
