If you’re new to Netflix or considering changing your subscription package, you might be in for a rude wake-up call. On July 19, Netflix revealed it was removing its cheapest ad-free option in the United States and the United Kingdom to motivate consumers to upgrade to a pricier subscription or switch to the ad-supported tier.

Netflix’s ad-free Basic plan previously cost subscribers $9.99/month in the U.S. and £6.99/month in the U.K. If you’re not ready to shell out $15.49 or more for the streamer’s more costly subscription tiers, then you can still sign-up for the Standard with Ads plan for $6.99/month.

This plan includes most of the streaming catalog sans a few options, but you must watch advertisements periodically alongside programming. The Standard with Ads plan only allows subscribers to watch on two devices simultaneously and does not include Ultra HD.

According to NBC News, this change comes ahead of Netflix’s plan to reveal its Q2 2023 earnings after the market closes on Wednesday, July 19. Canadian subscribers already had their Basic plan removed last month.

Of course, many people are already upset by the removal of the Basic plan, especially in light of Netflix’s recent password-sharing crackdown.

What happens if you already paid for the Basic plan on Netflix?

Don’t fret if you’re already a paying member of the Basic plan, as this change won’t affect your account.

Here’s what Netflix said about current Basic subscribers in the U.S. on its website:

"The Basic plan is no longer available for new or rejoining members. If you are currently on the Basic plan, you can remain on this plan until you change plans or cancel your account."

That means the change will only impact new members or people rejoining after previously canceling their account.

What is the difference between the Standard and Basic plans on Netflix?

The Basic plan on Netflix allowed subscribers to watch content on one device at a time in standard definition (SD) for $9.99/month. Now, the cheapest option for those who don’t want to watch advertisements will be the Standard plan, which is $15.49/month.
