Keep Sweet: Pray and Obey

With the release of the Netflix docuseries Waco: American Apocalypse, it might be worth learning more about another notable raid that occurred in Texas, this one over a decade later at the Yearning for Zion Ranch.

Keep Sweet: Pray and Obey is directed by Emmy and Peabody Award-winning filmmaker Rachel Dretzin and provides an in-depth look into a polygamous sect of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (FLDS) run by self-proclaimed prophet Warren Jeffs. The four-part doc contains never-before-seen footage and first-hand stories from several of the courageous men and women who were once part of the group.

Jeffs is a former member of the FBI’s Most Wanted List and a convicted child rapist currently serving a life sentence in prison. He was charged with two felony counts of child sexual assault in 2011. However, disturbingly, he still has many followers who even visit him in jail. The documentary chronicles the oppressive cult and the horrific criminal deeds that occurred there, including forced underage marriage and pregnancy.

Those who have heard of the FLDS should definitely give this documentary a watch, as even though it primarily focuses on Jeffs, it also digs into this religion and the overall culture at large.
