If you’ve been on the internet at all within the past week, then odds are you’ve seen the crazy news story about the missing submersible in the ocean. On June 18, a group of five passengers took a trip to see the Titanic wreckage off the coast of Newfoundland in a 21-foot deep sea vessel owned by a company known as OceanGate Expeditions.

The submersible lost all communication around 1 hour and 45 minutes after submerging with a 96-hour supply of oxygen. Countless news stories and social media tracked the United States Coast Guard’s recovery efforts.

Given the sensational nature of this story and the fact the people onboard were extremely wealthy, having paid $250,000 apiece for this trip, it made for a significant news story and sparked plenty of discourse surrounding wealth disparity, classism, and empathy.

On June 22, 2023, the coast guard officially declared all five passengers dead after debris matching the submarine was found about 1,600 feet from the Titanic’s bow, consistent with a catastrophic implosion. It’s a tragic end to a dramatic tale, and as ghoulish as it might be, the story has re-sparked interest in the Titanic, both as the historical event and the iconic 1997 film.

Interestingly, Titanic director James Cameron has made the trek to the wreckage site at least 33 times.

Is the Titanic streaming on Netflix?

The Titanic has been on and off Netflix multiple times in recent years, and it’s kind of crazy timing given the OceanGate story, but it’s returning to Netflix very soon. While the movie isn’t currently streaming on Netflix, it will be back on July 1, 2023.

I have a feeling it’s quickly going to return to the top of Netflix’s Top 10 chart and wouldn’t be surprised if people assume Netflix added the film back specifically due to OceanGate, though that’s unlikely the case as Netflix would have planned out their July schedule and licensing deals months ago.

For others with a morbid fascination for OceanGate or who just love the movie, you can currently stream the movie on Paramount+ and Prime Video.
