Did you know free diving is considered one of the world’s most dangerous sports? To the point that even climbing Mount Everest is considered less risky. Given what free diving entails, it’s not surprising to learn how dangerous it is. The upcoming Netflix and A24 documentary, The Deepest Breath, will follow a champion free diver’s endeavor to break the world’s free diving record.

For those unfamiliar with the extreme sport of free diving, it entails divers swimming deep into the ocean, as far as they can, holding a single breath. It’s similar to scuba diving in some ways, except the divers aren’t equipped with oxygen tanks. Instead, they spend years training to be able to dive the length of an entire skyscraper and beyond in a single breath.

What is The Deepest Breath about?

This new Netflix documentary from director Laura McGann follows Italian free-diving champion Alessia Zecchini and her expert safety specialist Stephen Keenan. Throughout the doc, we’ll learn how Zecchini and Keenan formed a close, unbreakable bond as Keenan helped Zecchini in her goal to become the world’s best free diver.

Given the danger of the sport, Zecchini’s dream was not without significant risks. With a combination of archival footage spanning 35 years, interviews with the subjects’ parents, and more, The Deepest Breath will take viewers on an intimate and emotional journey into the ocean’s depths alongside these two remarkable people. Filming took place in Rome, New York, Ireland, the Bahamas, and more.
