Extraction 2 recap
Extraction 2 spoilers!
Tyler Rake survives! Thanks to Nik Kahn (Golshifteh Farahani) and her help, Tyler is rescued from the river he fell into at the end of the first movie, nursed back to health, and given a nice little cabin in a remote forest in Austria to spend the rest of his days ice-fishing, hanging out with his dog and chickens, and enjoying life.
Instead, Tyler is asked to do another extraction by an unnamed but very fancy man, played by Idris Elba, to save the wife and children of a notorious Georgian gangster, Davit (Tornike Bziava). You see, Mia (Olga Kurylenko), Tyler’s ex-wife, asks this man to ask Tyler to rescue Mia’s sister, Ketevan (Tinatin Dalakishvili) and her children, Sandro (Andro Jafaridze) and Nina (Miriam and Marta Kovziashvili) from a Georgian prison where they’re being held against their will by Mia’s sister’s husband. Tyler agrees to do it, and he begins training for the mission.
In Georgia, Zurab (Tornike Gogrichiani), the leader of a Georgian gang, is told his brother’s (Sergo) prison sentence has been extended another 10 years. He kills a politician by stabbing him in the throat with a pitchfork. He’s a bad dude!
Tyler asks his partner, Nik, to join him on the mission to save Mia’s sister and her children, although for some reason he leaves that part out. Nik and Yaz (Adam Bessa) join him on the mission, and they hit the prison hard with a plan.
Tyler goes in solo and rescues the Ketevan, Sandro, and Nina, but it goes bad (as usual!), and he’s forced to improvise. During their exit, they are confronted by Davit, and Tyler kills him by stabbing him in the neck after he pushes Sandro and Nina through an opening to Nik and Yaz.
Tyler and Ketevan can’t fit, and they’re forced to fight their way through the yard of the prison during the riot, and it is absolute mayhem. Tyler kills a bunch of people and nearly dies like five times, but eventually, he leads Ketevan to the other side and is picked up by Nik and Yaz.
Unfortunately, the gang is on to them! They know that Davit has been killed. What ensues is an epic chase with motorcycles, armored cars, helicopters, so many guns, and a train. Tyler and the team eventually escape on a train, and after another epic fight sequence on the train, they eventually escape from Georgia and fly to Vienna.
In mid-flight, though, Sandro, who is distraught that his father was killed, calls his uncle, Zurab, and later reveals their location at an apartment in Vienna. Zurab’s forces lead a massive assault to try to kill Tyler, Nik, Yaz, Ketevan, and Nina for what they did to Davit. Yet again, Tyler finds himself on the opposite side of extraction and on the run against forces that greatly outnumber his own.
Sandro flees during their escape and gets into his uncle’s car and is safe during the battle.
Despite nearly dying dozens of times, Tyler, Nik, Ketevan, and Nina escape in one of Zurab’s helicopters and go to Tyler’s cabin in the forest to hide out. Unfortunately, Yaz is not so lucky. He dies in the helicopter on their way to the cabin.
At the cabin, Tyler reunites with Mia and apologizes for leaving her and their son while he was in the hospital to return to his job in Kandahar.
Zurab, then, calls Tyler and asks him to negotiate at a nearby airstrip. In the best exchange of the movie, Tyler says, “I’m not coming to negotiate!”
During the final confrontation, Zurab flees with Sandro. When Tyler catches up to them, Zurab has forced Sandro to wear a bomb, and Tyler surrenders. Zurab tries to get Sandro to kill Tyler, but he can’t do it. Luckily, Nik shows up just as Tyler is about to die. There’s a shootout and another epic fight sequence until Tyler finally kills Zurab, but it comes at a great cost. Nik and Tyler appear to be mortally wounded when the Austrian authorities show up.
Extraction 2 ending explained
At the end of the movie, Tyler is in an Austrian prison. Mia shows up and tells them a final story about their son, and then she says goodbye.
It looks like Tyler Rake will spend his remaining years in prison, right? Wrong!
At the very end of the movie, Tyler is sent to a remote location where Idris Elba’s character is waiting for him. He offers to get Tyler out for another job, and Tyler says he won’t do it without his partner, Nik. Well, she’s also there, wearing prison attire.
It looks like we’re doing this again!
At the very end, Elba’s character teases that who he works for is “a gnarly mother******.” So, it looks like we’re going to be meeting a few more high-profile characters in the next movie.
To recap, at the end of Extraction 2, Tyler and Nik are alive and in different Austrian prisons. They’ve agreed to work with Elba’s character in the future. Let’s go!
Does Tyler Rake or Nik die in Extraction 2?
Nope, somehow, Tyler Rake does not die in Extraction 2. There are at least a dozen times when his death looks imminent, but he always finds a way to come out on top and keep moving forward.
The same goes for Nik, who takes more than a few bullets throughout the movie and especially during the final two battles with Zurab and his men. Nik is alive at the end of the movie, though, and it looks like we’ll see her again in the future.
Who dies in Extraction 2?
While Tyler and Nik survive, there is so much death in this movie. There are probably at least 50 people involved who die in the movie, and that’s not counting the prison riot.
The most important deaths in the movie are obviously: Davit, which sets this whole thing off, Zurab, and Yaz, who dies on the helicopter ride from Vienna after getting shot in the back by Zurab during the final sequence on the high-rise.
How long is Extraction 2?
Extraction 2 is a long action movie! It doesn’t feel that long, though. It’s so fast-paced with some much-needed breaks in between for our characters to heal and process emotional wounds. The runtime on Extraction 2 is just over two hours. Officially, the runtime is 2 hours and four minutes, including the credits, on Netflix.
