Black Mirror season 6 episode 4 recap: “Mazey Day”

The fourth episode of Black Mirror season 6, “Mazey Day,” takes us back to 2006 and shows us the horrors of paparazzi and media attention on celebrities. Oh, and it throws in a supernatural element you won’t ever see coming.

This one opens up by introducing us to a character named Bo, a woman who works in the paparazzi business. One of her jobs, unfortunately, leads to tragedy when she photographs a male celebrity cheating on his girlfriend with another man and he kills himself over it. It’s absolutely terrible and Bo feels responsible for it. Because of this, she comes to terms with the fact that this line of work really is unethical, and she quits.

However, once she hears of a job that’s paying around $30,000 just for one photo, she caves. She could really use the money, being late for rent, and decides to pursue it. But the lead she follows takes her to an extremely dark place.

We also get to know a character named Mazey Day in this episode, as the title suggests, an actress who has a breakdown after one fateful night filming a movie in the Czech Republic. One evening alone, she lets loose and eats magic mushrooms while also drinking wine. She dances around the house before she realizes she’s out of cigarettes, and decides to go for a drive to buy more. Of course, this doesn’t end well. Mazey hits a person with her car and drives back without telling anyone.

Mazey ends up getting kicked off her movie for erratic behavior and is sent back to America, where she stays in hiding. A mega celebrity in hiding is the perfect target for the paparazzi, and she’s the one Bo needs the photo of. After some investigating, Bo finds out where Mazey’s staying and one day she follows a car she believes Mazey is in. They drive a long way and end up pulling into a diner, where a man comes out of the car and slashes Bo’s tires.

Stranded at this diner, Bo calls up her friend and fellow paparazzi Hector, who shows up to help find Mazey together. Bo discovers there’s a luxurious rehab facility nearby and someone rented out the place for the weekend. She realizes this must be where Mazey was headed, and she and Hector go check the place out.

When Bo and Hector arrive, they realize they’re not alone. Two other paparazzi, particularly sleazy ones, followed them and want the photo of Mazey, too. The four of them sneak onto the property and start photographing everything. They walk up to a building and discover Mazey laying in a bed with a chain around her neck. As the others try to take more photos, Bo is genuinely concerned for the actress. She breaks in and realizes Mazey is chained to the floor. Mazey is completely out of it and feels feverish, and while Bo tries to help her, the paparazzi continue snapping pictures.

Bo unchains Mazey, which we quickly realize is a bad idea. A full moon comes out, and Mazey starts acting weird. She transforms into a werewolf and begins attacking the paparazzi! As it’s revealed, that night she committed a hit-and-run was actually when she got turned into a werewolf. Mazey kills two of the men while Bo and Hector are able to escape.

Black Mirror season 6 episode 4, “Mazey Day,” ending explained

Mazey chases Bo and Hector to the diner, where they try to get help. There’s a police officer there, but he won’t call for backup until they explain what happens. There’s not enough time, however, and Mazey comes into the diner. She attacks and kills everyone except Bo, and then changes back to her human body after Bo shoots her. Lying on the diner floor, naked and covered in blood, she asks Bo to kill her to take her out of her misery.

Bo takes the cop’s gun and places it in Mazey’s hand, tilting it so she has it pointed at her head. But instead of pulling the trigger to make it look like she killed herself, Bo snaps a photo. She finally gets a photograph worth a fortune, but at what cost?
