Manifest season 4 episode 19 recap: Formation

The penultimate episode of Manifest opens with a flashback to Ben and Michaela as kids arguing in the woods while gathering firewood. The argue about being captains and the methods they use to do so. Ben focuses on what’s in front of him, while Michaela zooms out to the big picture. Their mother suggests they be co-captains (oh, what a prophecy!), and Michaela carves their initials into a nearby tree. Cute!

Saanvi marvels at the ALNI patients awaking from their comas. However, Marko only speaks Bulgarian, and the other patient doesn’t remember anything. She checks the camera in the lab and sees Marko’s first words — “kovcheg” — upon waking up. He draws a coffin, and they assume that’s what he meant by “kovcheg.”

Cal discusses his peacock Calling with Olive, admitting that two sapphires come together as a star and considering that’s how he’ll save the world. The Stones insist that Cal will have to convince Angelina to work with him. He summons Angelina on the plane and tries to appeal to her as their sapphires glow and connect. She balks at his mention of the pain she’s caused, but she believes she’s the redeemer and doesn’t need to be redeemed. Yeah, she’s not hearing it. She wants the world to end because it’s “cleansing.”

Olive takes note of Zeke’s Gemini drawing along with Cal’s peacock drawing and the dragon figurine. The three original symbols could hold the answers to stopping the Death Date. They theorize that the two sapphires need to connect differently this time. Also, Marko secondarily identifies “kovcheg” as an ark, which furthers Saanvi’s realization that the Shenlong dragon (“the king of storms”) figurine represents the location. She previously threw a piece of Noah’s Ark, which contained sapphire, into the fissure at Storm King Mountain. All they need is the driftwood to finish Cal’s Calling.

They arrive at Storm King Mountain, which has been permanently closed. Olive notices that the fissure makes the same shape as Cal’s dragon scar. The team gets to work on axing into the fissure, but they’re getting nowhere. Somehow, Cal knows they’re supposed to wait. While picking up firewood, Ben and Micaela notice their carved initials in the same tree from when they were kids. Cute!

Sitting around the fire, they all reflect on what they want to do if (when?) they survive the Death Date. Finally, Ben and Saanvi talk about their steamy moment, both agreeing that they aren’t each other’s endgame. (Sorry, Benvi shippers!) Before going to sleep, they each embrace each other in knowing, emotional hugs. In their tent, Michaela breaks up with Jared, telling him he doesn’t want to take him away from his new family with Drea. (Sorry, Jachaela shippers!)

Cal startles awake in the middle of the night and walks toward the fissure. As the fissure glows, so does his dragon scar. Ben notices he’s left the tent and catches Cal before he sacrifices himself to the fissure. Although it’s emotional, Cal knows what he needs to do. He steps into the fissure and the sapphires connect. All at once, Cal disappears in a blue glow that beams high into the sky, high enough for Angelina to see and all of the passengers to sense.

Biggest Revelations:

  • Adrian allegedly wants to make amends, which is what he claims he’s been up to for months. Tracking down those he’s hurt to apologize in order to redeem himself to help save the passengers and world. Thankfully, he’s not sipping Angelina’s Kool-Aid. He fights back against her methods and lack of an Ark.
  • Adrian returns his mother’s necklace to Eagan, which seems to shake him loose. Eagan admits that he knows where the ark is. He overheard Saanvi talking about the driftwood. Because of this, Adrian and Eagan leave Angelina’s flock.
  • Drea accidentally reveals to Jared that they’re having a baby girl, and they plan to name her Hope.
  • Ben sends Vance away from the campsite to be with his family in Florida. The pair share a tearful goodbye ahead of the Death Date.
