Manifest season 4 episode 17 recap: Threshold

Eight months have passed since the previous episode, bringing us one month away from the dreaded Death Date on June 2, 2024. Since we last saw her, Drea has quit her job as a cop and bought a “decrepit building” in “dumpy neighborhood,” according to her mother. Those aren’t the only surprises about Drea… She’s pregnant! And breaking down a wall in her new apartment that doesn’t look very homey. What are you up to, Drea?

Ben has the detention center running like a well-oiled machine, though a passenger named Randall still gives him some trouble. Bethany and Thomas bring up rations concerns, which prompts the first appearance of Ben’s glasses in Manifest season 4 part 2! It’s the little things. Unfortunately, the tremors are getting worse and worse, and a big one takes out the center’s power. Because they’re on life support, the ALNI patients are in danger.

Two of the ALNI patients die in the power outage, but they save the rest with a generator. Olive suggest making an SOS banner for the outside world to see for help with power. Ben and Joe also make a flare. The banner and flare cause guards to shoot up at Ben and the other passengers on the roof.

In spite of her insistence, Jared won’t allow Michaela to help follow Callings in the wild after their Xer-sympathizing neighbor tried to kill her. Meanwhile, Cal’s looking a little rough after throwing himself in the deep end of getting all of the Callings. Needless to say, he goes back on 828 and receives a Calling of purple flowers and vines choking him in seat 14F, which they identify as Autumn Cox’s seat. Cal also saw a white grid and reflections. Michaela clocks them as window slats at Beverly’s house.

Jared and Cal enter Beverly’s house, where the Stone family had been living, to find Angelina and the safe house passengers squatting. Little Miss Archangel delivers a sermon to her “flock,” and when Cal confronts her, she tries her best at gaslighting him into working with her. Jared talks to Autumn about her Calling, and though she refuses to talk to him, he takes a picture of a framed photo of Autumn and her daughter in front of purple flowers and vines. Autumn rebuffs Cal’s invitation to leave with them, but Astrid seems to have second thoughts about sticking beside Angelina.

Vance and Michaela look into Starry Saplings Daycare from Autumn’s photo and realize the building it used to be in is only a block away from the detention center… and it’s currently owned by Mikami Inc… Drea! Speaking of Drea, she hires some random guy to help drill through the wall in the building, but noticing her vulnerability as a pregnant woman and her expensive handbag, he steals her bag and holds her at knifepoint.

Steve wants to see Ben, and Michaela is full-steam ahead on going to Drea’s building to get close enough to the detention center as they can. Cal and Jared are one step ahead of them after finding the purple flowers and vines. They rush in when they hear Drea call for help. Jared threatens the schemer, while Cal cuts her loose and finds out she’s pregnant. It’s a shock to Jared, too, when he sees that she’s pregnant. But there’s no time to talk parentage after they hear shots come from the detention center.

Drea shows them her next surprise, the wall connecting to the center that she has been secretly drilling through to help free the passengers. Jared finishes drilling through, which lends the question as to why she didn’t call him in the first place. But let’s not get into that. As they talk about making hard choices about the ALNI patients, Ben and Joe overhear the drilling and find Cal, Jared, and Drea. Power for the ALNI patients has been restored, and Ben learns about Cal getting all of the passengers’ Callings.

Michaela arrives with Steve and is the next person to be hit with Drea’s pregnancy bombshell, which she doesn’t immediately comment on. There’s bigger fish to fry, such as Ben letting the passengers in on the detention center’s new exit and introducing them to Cal. Some of the passengers resolve to stay and solve the Callings, while others opt to leave the detention center.

Later that evening once everything has settled down, Cal visits a still comatose Marko, but the Bulgarian passenger reaches out and grabs Cal’s arm. Cal has a Calling of a peacock — the peacock — this time with two sapphires that meet in the middle. Suddenly, he remembers what Angelina told him about working together in order to survive the Death Date.

Biggest Revelations:

  • As if we didn’t already know, Drea confirms to Jared that he’s the father of her baby. Michaela catches them having a moment together, reveling in the excitement of imminent parenthood. They have something together that she isn’t part of, not directly. She doesn’t interrupt their moment, but she’s going to have to confront this soon.
  • And she does! Kind of… Michaela and Drea have a chance to talk, and Drea insists that it happened “ages ago” and that it was before she and Jared got back together. Well, obviously… It’s been eight months. Mick tells her friend that she’s happy for all of them, but the conversation still feels very incomplete.
  • Astrid leaves Angelina’s “safe house” and arrives in Drea’s building. She takes more of her anxiety pills, but after seeing Autumn and Angelina next to a box of rat poisoning and a forgotten pill on the ground, it’s safe to say they filled her pills with poison.
