Netflix shows canceled: The Midnight Club
- Created By: Mike Flanagan and Leah Fong
- Starring: Iman Benson, Igby Rigney, Ruth Codd, Heather Langenkamp, and more
There was a lot of hype surrounding Netflix’s The Midnight Club, which debuted in October 2022, because of the names attached. Co-creator Mike Flanagan is best known for his horror series on the streamer, including The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor, and Midnight Mass – all of which received critical acclaim.
Flanagan recruited many of his frequent collaborators for The Midnight Club and added the wonderful Heather Langenkamp to the cast, best known for playing Nancy Thompson in the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise.
With so much promise and anticipation for The Midnight Club, I think the disconnect between this release and Flanagan’s past works is that this one was based on a YA book. And while Netflix has had a ton of success with teen shows and movies, the promotion for The Midnight Club didn’t really make it clear who the target audience was. If people went into it thinking they were getting a show as scary and mature as The Haunting series, for instance, they would be disappointed.
According to Forbes, The Midnight Club saw 18.7 million hours streamed in its first three days, which is low by Netflix standards. The series debuted in the number four slot on the streamer’s Top 10 and peaked in its second week at only the third spot. The unimpressive viewership numbers had many waiting for a cancellation, which was announced in December 2022.
