Netflix shows canceled: Archive 81

  • Created By: Rebecca Sonnenshine
  • Starring: Mamoudou Athie, Dina Shihabi, Evan Jonigkeit, Martin Donovan, Julia Chan, Ariana Neal, and Matt McGorry

Archive 81 was one of the first popular shows on Netflix in 2022, based on the found footage horror podcast of the same name. Though there was little promotion for the show, it received good reviews from critics and was widely watched through word of mouth.

In its first three weeks of release, according to What’s On Netflix, Archive 81 saw an impressive 129.47 million hours streamed. However, the site says there was a significant dropoff (almost 50%) between its second and third week.

About two months after Archive 81 premiered, Netflix officially canceled it. Fans of the show were genuinely upset and disappointed to hear the news, especially considering the fact that the streamer doesn’t have many successful, long-running horror shows beyond Stranger Things. Archive 81 told a gripping story and many people wanted to see it go on for future seasons, the creator included.

In an interview with Variety at the time of Archive 81’s release, showrunner Rebecca Sonnenshine teased the mystery of the character Samuel and said his storyline is a “very exciting branch of our story that we definitely know what we’re doing with.” It’s been long enough now since the cancellation to assume another streamer won’t save Archive 81, so unfortunately, viewers won’t get to know what happens next.
