Netflix shows canceled: The Chair
- Created By: Amanda Peet and Annie Julia Wyman
- Starring: Sandra Oh, Jay Duplass, Nana Mensah, Bob Balaban, Holland Taylor, and David Morse
Though The Chair was released on Netflix in August 2021, it wasn’t until January 2023 that Netflix decided to announce its cancellation. The six-episode dramedy follows Sandra Oh’s character Ji-Yoon Kim, who begins her new job as the chair of the English department at a well-regarded college. She’s the first woman to ever have the position, and the series shows the ups and downs of her new career.
The Chair doesn’t reinvent the wheel, but it’s an enjoyable story and an easy show to binge on a rainy weekend. And while it, of course, didn’t do viewership numbers like Netflix hits Stranger Things or Wednesday, the series received pretty positive reviews from critics and viewers alike. We weren’t exactly expecting a second season considering the show very much feels like a limited series in the way it wraps up, but we still would’ve loved to have seen what’s next for Ji-Yoon.
According to What’s On Netflix, The Chair was only in Netflix’s Top 10 for one week, which is a pretty bad sign for a show’s future. What’s interesting is that the streamer waited so long to cancel the show. I guess there are complexities to their renewal and cancellation decisions that we aren’t privy to.
