Netflix shows canceled: Gypsy

  • Created By: Lisa Rubin
  • Starring: Naomi Watts, Billy Crudup, Sophie Cookson, Lucy Boyton, Karl Glusman, Melanie Liburd, Poorna Jagannathan, Brenda Vaccaro, Brooke Bloom

It doesn’t matter if it’s streaming series or a traditional network show — fans aren’t happy when their new favorite doesn’t live to see season 2. But one-and-dones happen so often on the small screen that we barely bat an eyelash anymore. Netflix had cultivated a culture of giving shows time to grow, which made the swift exit of the Naomi Watts thriller Gypsy a definite blow.

The two-time Academy Award-nominated actress stars in Gypsy as the troubled psychologist Jean Holloway, who goes over the line of her professional limits and dives into relationships with the people close to her patients. The series, which earned mostly negative reviews with critics, struck a strong chord with fans who connected with the characters and storytelling.

Gypsy joins a long line of shows that were canceled after one season despite heaps of promise. It’s a tale as old as time, and one TV fans have been singing since great shows were either mistreated by their networks or misunderstood by the viewing public. We may never know if Gypsy had staying power beyond its first and only season, but it will always be excitingly bittersweet for its diehard fans to wonder.
