If you got hooked on and became obsessed with the teen mystery drama The Society in spring 2019, you were definitely looking forward to the quickly sanctioned second season. The series was picking up steam with a growing fanbase, but one year after getting picked up for season 2, Netflix abruptly canceled the full-fledged hit in the making due to pandemic-related production issues.
The Society centers on a group of teenaged friends, who find themselves relying on each other to figure out how to govern their community when the remainder of their town’s population disappears into thin air. When the teens return from a field trip and find their town deserted and a forest closing in, they discover the outside world no longer exists and they’re forced to fend for themselves.
The teen mystery series was one of the many recent fan-favorites Netflix had been bulking up their roster with, paving the way for a future beyond the veteran series coming to their end. Positive reviews for The Society and its viewer reaction led to an obvious pickup, but added costs and complicated scheduling contributed to the pandemic nixed the next chapter. We’ll never know what could have been with this truly good series canceled after one season.
