As much as we wish most shows could stick around for six seasons and movie, it’s not always in the cards. Depending on a number of variables, from viewership to critical reception, a show’s fate remains up in the air until it gets that coveted greenlight to keep going. Disappointingly, Netflix’s coming-of-age teen dramedy Everything Sucks! didn’t benefit from the wave of new teen hits.

Everything Sucks! takes place in 1996 and pokes fun at the adolescent culture that pervaded the mid to late-1990s. The series follows the lives of “misfit” students from the A/V and drama clubs at Boring High School in Boring, Oregon. Luke O’Neil (Jahi Di’Allo Winston) attempts to stay afloat with his friends through thoughtful explorations of sexuality, mental health and friendship.

The high school series recalls another one-and-done cult favorite coming-of-age show, the eternally underrated Freaks and Geeks, which in itself was a period dramedy. Although Everything Sucks! received mostly positive reviews from critics, they lived up to its angsty title when Netflix pulled the plug after a singular season of 10 episodes.
