Even though stylized teen drama series have found a new haven on Netflix, that doesn’t mean each and every one will prove a pop culture sensation. But that doesn’t stop us from getting excited about the prospect of a genre-leaning teen series that transports us to a totally different reality. Netflix’s original series Daybreak had all of that promise but make the expected splash.

Based on the comic series of the same name by Brian Ralph, Daybreak takes place in a post-apocalyptic version of Glendale, California as 17-year-old Canadian transfer student Josh Wheeler (Colin Ford) searches for his missing girlfriend, Sam Dean (Sophie Simnett). Josh attempts to survive the dangerous throngs of gangs with a band of misfits, including young pyromaniac Angelica (Alyvia Alyn Lind) and reformed bully Wesley (Austin Crute).

Daybreak premiered on Netflix in October 2019 and earned mostly positive reviews from critics, holding a solid 70% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. In spite of its well-received post-apocalyptic Ferris Bueller take on the teen drama series, Daybreak couldn’t quite break out like fellow stylized teen fare Outer Banks. We may not have gotten to follow along for more of the ride, but it’s plenty fun for a 10-episode ride nonetheless.
