In a short amount of time, Netflix has changed the way we watch entertainment. But it’s also changed the way we create it. The success of its high-concept originals and ambitious storytelling efforts has definitely upped the ante across the board. But sometimes those ambitious show don’t always work out how they planned, like the period musical drama The Get Down.
Taking place in the Bronx in the 1970s, The Get Down is centered in the world of hip-hop and disco as the genres come to define a generation and the industry. The series follows a group of teenagers with dreams of making their mark in the music scene and their struggles with their relationships, home lives, professional goals and obstacles to achieve their dreams.
The Get Down comes from visionary director Baz Luhrmann, who imbued the series with an unmistakable visual tone, not unlike his past work. The series garnered mostly positive reviews from critics, but its 11-episode first season, split into two mini runs months apart, failed to pick up steam with viewers. If nothing else, The Get Down remains an exciting taste of the past and gave us a truly underrated disco bop from Christina Aguilera.
