For television viewers, there’s a special kind of hurt when a series that has been renewed for another season has that renewal reversed, especially when it’s a new series you have become completed obsessed with. Last year, Netflix’s original South African crime drama series Queen Sono arrived to critical acclaim, viewership success and a second-season pickup… until the latter was later taken away.

Queen Sono stars Pearl Thusi as the titular South African field agent for the Special Operations Group. Queen Sono uses her spy specialties to investigate criminal operations and help make the lives of South Africans better. As she faces what becomes one of her most dangerous and challenging missions to date, Queen Sono also faces complications with her personal relationships.

Upon release in February 2020, Queen Sono racked up positive reception from critics with its 91% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The streaming giant’s first South African original series proved an addictive hit, but production cost increases and scheduling difficulties caused by the pandemic brought the second season renewal to a screeching halt. We may not be getting another season of Queen Sono, but it’s one of Netflix’s best one-season wonders.
