It’s no secret that the comedy landscape on television has changed over the years. Where multi-cam sitcoms like Friends and Frasier used to reign supreme, popular single-camera comedies like The Office and Modern Family (not to mention plenty of inventive streaming comedies) have changed the shape of comedy. Netflix’s original sitcom Disjointed got caught in the middle of this shift.
Kathy Bates stars in Disjointed as Ruth Whitefeather Feldman, a legalized marijuana advocate puts her money where her mouth is and operates a cannabis dispensary in Los Angeles. Ruth works with her son, Travis (Aaron Moten), and a young team of “budtenders.” The comedy tackles the history of all things marijuana while delving into the personal lives of the dispensary’s staff and their relationships with each other in the workplace.
Disjointed aired one 20-episode season, which was split into two parts, before getting canceled by Netflix. While something of a thematic risk, Disjointed enjoyed a cult following despite its 22% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Even though multi-cam sitcoms had found success on Netflix, sitcom mastermind Chuck Lorre couldn’t quite translate his knack for comedy from network TV to streaming with the otherwise disjointed Disjointed.
