Because of Netflix’s breadth of content, sometimes its shows aren’t entirely its own. Not following? Well, the USA Network teen drama series Dare Me partnered with Netflix for its international release. But unlike You’s lucky leap from cable to streaming, the cheerleading thriller couldn’t replicate the sleeper hit success and ended up canceled after one season.
Based on the novel of the same name by Megan Abbott, Dare Me stars MTV’s Scream star Willa Fitzgerald as Coach Colette French, the new cheerleading coach at Sutton Grove High School. The series tracks the goings on of the small midwestern town’s competitive cheerleading team, adding up to something like Bring It On by way of Euphoria with a sprinkling of Big Little Lies.
Dare Me, while not Netflix’s to cancel, was ultimately axed by the USA Network after a 10-week sprint between December 2019 and March 2020. In spite of mostly positive review from critics, Dare Me couldn’t manage to dare to defy the limitations for a series of its kind on a network like USA. Maybe if it had been a worldwide Netflix original from the get-go, the series wouldn’t have been sidelined as an underrated binge you happen upon while scrolling through Netflix.
