One thing’s for sure: We will always be endlessly fascinated with space. There’s no shortage in shows and movies that travel beyond our planet, and whether it’s Interstellar or Space Force, the subject matter never ceases to keep us hooked. Unfortunately, Netflix’s original sci-fi drama Away couldn’t stick the Mars landing, even with Academy Award winner Hilary Swank leading the mission.

Swank stars in Away as Emma Green, an astronaut for NASA and the commander of the Atlas ship’s mission to Mars. The series tackles the taxing emotional demands of the international crew as they reconcile the task at hand with the life and people they leave behind on Earth. Emma leaves her husband (Josh Charles) and daughter (Talitha Bateman) while she’s away in space.

Away was first released on Netflix in September 2020, after the summer rush of fresh new releases but ahead of the buzzy fall lineup. The series, which comes from Friday Night Lights and Parenthood executive producer Jason Katims, earned middling reviews from critics and didn’t seem to make lasting connections with Netflix’s core audience. Although the mission was cut short, fans of space dramas will find something to love about these touching 10 episodes.
