Netflix shows canceled: AJ and the Queen

  • Created By: RuPaul and Maichel Patrick King
  • Starring: RuPaul, Izzy G., Michael-Leon Wooley, Josh Segarra

Although Netflix ultimately found comedy hits in Never Have I Ever and Emily in Paris, the streaming network seemed to struggle in the comedy sphere in 2020 as a few popular standbys ended or entered their final run. One of the misses of the past year was RuPaul’s one-and-done dramedy turn in AJ and the Queen, an essential watch for Drag Race fans.

RuPaul stars in AJ and the Queen as Ruby Red, a larger-than-life drag star who has had much better luck in her career. Rudy Red travels across the country from city to city to perform in different clubs to make a buck. But Ruby’s luck seems to change when she hits the open road with 10-year-old orphaned stowaway AJ (Izzy G.), who helps spread Ruby’s message to those who need it.

Unfortunately, RuPaul’s latest television venture didn’t prove to become nearly as successful as the Emmy-winning reality series than remains a highly talked-about event series. The dramedy holds a middling rating of 52% on Rotten Tomatoes and seemed to fizzle with its January 2020 bow. However, it’s a charming watch with dozens of lovable guest stars and titular duo you’ll surely take a 10-episode adventure with across the country.
