I have a theory that Grand Army‘s cancellation all came down to poor timing. It’s hard to imagine that in a world where Euphoria is HBO’s most successful show behind Game of Thrones that another edgy teen drama would fail to catch on, especially since we’re seeing a new wave of teen shows.
Grand Army suffered a similar fate to genera+ion, another short-lived teen drama that deserved better airing on HBO Max. Imagine if both of those series were preparing to premiere this summer. I wonder if they could have used Euphoria‘s heightened popularity to become hits. Tons of people are surely missing Euphoria right now; what better time for a series like Grand Army? Unfortunately, it just wasn’t meant to be.
But, like some other series on this list, Grand Army more or less functions okay as a single season. It’s still worth watching, even if it deserved additional seasons. Premiering in 2020, Grand Army was loosely based on Katie Cappiello’s Slut: The Play and revolved around the lives of several teens attending the public Grand Army High School in Brooklyn, New York.
