Netflix shows canceled: Cowboy Bebop

  • Created by: Christopher Yost
  • Starring: John Cho, Mustafa Shakir, Daniella Pineda, Elena Satine and Alex Hassell

Netflix has not had much luck with live-action adaptations of popular anime series. Remember Death Note? Fans weren’t expecting much when news of a Cowboy Bebop adaptation was announced. For context, Cowboy Bebop is one of the most popular and beloved anime series of all time, so Netflix already had a behemoth challenge ahead of them to make a live-action show that would offer something different while still respecting the source material.

Unfortunately, most critics and diehard fans didn’t enjoy the 2021 sci-fi series, even if it had a compelling cast. It’s not too surprising that Netflix canceled this show, although some genuinely enjoyed it and felt that it had something unique and charming to offer. Perhaps if Netflix had given the series another chance, it might have found its footing and gone on to be more successful.

As it stands, Netflix didn’t seem to be happy with the show’s performance or backlash and canceled it pretty fast. It usually takes several months for the streamer to cancel something, but with Cowboy Bebop, Netflix pulled the plug on this show in just over one month.
