We also shared everything you need to know about Sex Education season 4 below. We’re updating this story as most information becomes available. The latest update was on Wednesday, May 17, 2023.

The third season of Sex Education premiered on Netflix in September 2021. Fans had to wait a super long time for the new season because of the pandemic. Based on some new information, fans likely won’t have to wait all that long for Sex Education season 4!

Sex Education season 4 latest news

We shared all the latest news about Sex Education season 4 below:

  • Netflix confirmed that Sex Education season 4 release will be in the fall of 2023
  • Production on Sex Education season 4 wrapped in February 2023
  • Asa Butterfield, Aimee Lou Wood, Emma Mackey, Ncuti Gatwa, Gillian Anderson, and other Sex Education stars will be back for season 4, but Simone Ashley, Patricia Allison, and other former stars are not returning in season 4.

Sex Education season 4 release will be in the fall of 2023

Netflix has not announced the official release date for Sex Education season 4 yet, but Netflix confirmed Sex Education season 4 is coming to the streaming service in the fall of 2023. The news was announced on May 17, 2023.

So far, we know that Virgin River season 5, Love is Blind season 5, and Top Boy season 3 are confirmed for September 2023. That’s going to be a pretty stacked month for Netflix. While we definitely could see the new season sometime in September, it’s probably looking more likely that Netflix holds Sex Education season 4 until October.

For now, the new Netflix shows coming in October only includes Lupin season 3.

We have to anticipate that, as the writers’ strike continues, Netflix will eventually start pushing back some releases, and it’s possible that Sex Education season 4 could be included in that group. We’re not ready to say that just yet, but it’s possible.

For now, we’re expecting to see Sex Education season 4 in October 2023. We’ll let you know more about the release date when we find out.

Release Prediction: October 2023

Sex Education season 4 filming wrapped in February 2023

Sex Education star Asa Butterfield took to Twitter in August 2022 to reveal that filming for the fourth season had begun! Check out his selfie below.

According to PopSugar, it looks like production on the fourth season has wrapped. On Feb. 10, Sex Education star Aimee Lou Wood (Aimee Gibbs) posted flowers on her Instagram story along with a caption saying, “Wrap on season 4. Everyone has worked so hard. Thank you. Love you.” The day before, Ncuti Gatwa (Eric) posted a photo of his Sex Education trailer with his character’s name on it on his Instagram page with a caption reading, “Last day. Last time. Bye bubs, thank you for all the lessons and for all the strength.”

The latest Sex Education star to speak on production wrapping up is Chinenye Ezeudu (Vivienne Odusanya). She posted a collage of photos of her on set of Sex Education season 4 on Instagram with a caption reading, “That’s a wrap – here are some of my favourite moments.” So, it looks like filming finished up in early February.

Sex Education season 4 cast

Expect to see some changes when Sex Education returns. Bridgerton star Simone Ashley has opted not to return for season 4. She played Olivia on the series and announced that she would not be returning during a visit to ITV’s This Morning.

Then in early July, Patricia Allison revealed she would also be exiting the series after three seasons. Allison played Otis’s friend Ola for three seasons.

Besides Ashley and Allison, other main cast members like Asa Butterfield, Gillian Anderson, Ncuti Gatwa and Emma Mackey are expected to return, although Mackey and Gatwa have been busy filming the upcoming Barbie movie starring Margot Robbie. And speaking of Gatwa, he has recently been announced as the new Doctor Who, which is very exciting. That also might have caused some scheduling conflicts but reportedly filming for Doctor Who is set to wrap soon, allowing Gatwa to return as Eric in Sex Education. However, if the Netflix series is returned for a fifth season, it might be more challenging for Gatwa’s schedule to allow him to both shows.

On Feb. 15, 2023, Ncuti Gatwa has announced the fourth season will be his last season.

Variety just reported Jodie Turner-Smith has also joined the cast of Sex Education season 4 after Gatwa personally invited her to be part of the season.

On July 13, it was announced that Tanya Reynolds, who plays Lily, will not be returning for the new season, which makes sense since Ola is also departing.

On Aug. 19, we got really exciting news when Netflix announced Schitt’s Creek star Dan Levy would be joining the cast of Sex Education season 4! He will be playing Maeve’s tutor in the U.S. named Thomas. How fun!

We have a pretty good confirmed list of cast members for Sex Education season 4 now, which you can see below:

  • Asa Butterfield as Otis Milburn
  • Gillian Anderson as Dr. Jean Milburn
  • Ncuti Gatwa as Eric Effiong

Is Sex Education season 4 the final season?

Netflix has not officially confirmed that Sex Education season 4 is the final season, but it sure feels like that. The show is losing lots of cast members as the years go on, including Emma Mackey, who confirmed that season 4 will be her last. Ncuti Gatwa is also leaving the series after season 4.

It’s hard to imagine the series without those two characters, but it looks like that is what Netflix is planning to do.

We’ll just have to wait until Sex Education season 4 comes out until we learn more.

Sex Education season 4 synopsis

Check out the full synopsis for Sex Education season 4 below:

“Following the closure of Moordale Secondary, Otis and Eric now face a new frontier — their first day at Cavendish Sixth Form College. Otis is nervous about setting up his new clinic, while Eric is praying they won’t be losers again. But Cavendish is a culture shock for all the Moordale students — they thought they were progressive but this new college is another level. There’s daily yoga in the communal garden, a strong sustainability vibe and a group of kids who are popular for being … kind?! Viv is totally thrown by the college’s student-led, non-competitive approach, while Jackson is still struggling to get over Cal. Aimee tries something new by taking an Art A Level and Adam grapples with whether mainstream education is for him. Over in the U.S., Maeve is living her dream at prestigious Wallace University, being taught by cult author Thomas Molloy. Otis is pining after her, while adjusting to not being an only child at home, or the only therapist on campus.”

Sounds like the drama won’t stop in Sex Education season 4! Stay tuned for more news about the highly-anticipated season.
