Top 5 scariest Netflix Originals of all time as of 2023, ranked
By Mads Lennon
There are plenty of horror movies and shows to watch on Netflix, but when it comes to the most hair-raising, horrifying Netflix Originals, the following five take the cake. We’re ranking the scariest Netflix Originals ever made (at least, as of this year!).
When it comes to horror, Netflix is very hit or miss, and sadly, in recent years, they’ve had far more misses than hits. But that doesn’t mean there isn’t anything worthwhile on the platform; you’ve just got to dig a little to get to the good stuff.
Top 5 scariest Netflix Originals of all time, ranked
Without further ado, let’s discuss some of the scariest Netflix Originals of all time!
5. Fear Street: 1666
All of the Fear Street movies are great and could easily be on this list (who could forget the infamous bread slicer death from the first movie?). But I tried to narrow it down to just one, and I think the third movie, which takes place in 1666, is the clear winner. Most fans and critics agree that the third movie is the best in the trilogy, and it does a great job of tying together all the plotlines established in the first two films.
4. Apostle
If you like folk and religious horror, Apostle is an absolute must-watch movie on Netflix that has gone tragically underrated since it was released. Dan Stevens stars as Thomas Richardson. Thomas returns home to London in 1905 only to learn his sister has been kidnapped by a religious cult, and they’re harboring her on an island. He infiltrates the island under the guise of becoming part of the cult and discovers that the evil lurking there is far more disturbing than he could have imagined.
3. The Ritual
Based on the novel of the same name by Adam Nevill, The Ritual has a straightforward premise: Four friends reunite after a tragedy to go on a hike through the Scandinavian wilderness. Unfortunately for them, they make a wrong turn and find themselves being stalked by an ancient evil that starts picking them off one by one. What makes The Ritual so frightening is the atmospheric thrills and the creature’s design.
2. His House
His House is a moving and terrifying film that highlights the terrors of the refugee experience. From director Remi Weekes in his feature debut, His House follows a refugee couple from South Sudan as they try to adjust to life in an English town. They soon realize that there is something evil lurking in their new home.
1. The Haunting of Hill House
When it comes to creating scary content for Netflix, there really isn’t anyone better than Mike Flanagan. But even though he’s created several projects for the streamer throughout the years, The Haunting of Hill House has genuinely stood the test of time as one of his best and one of the best on Netflix.
Not only is the first season of The Haunting anthology series terrifying, but it’s genuinely fantastic, with excellent writing and gripping performances. I’m still bitter the show was snubbed by the Emmys. If you haven’t watched Hill House yet, now is the time. Prepare to become one of the many of us still haunted by the Bent-Neck Lady.
