Bird Box Barcelona release date, cast, synopsis, trailer, and everything we know so far

Are you ready to see? It has been five years since Sandra Bullock starred in the hit Netflix film Bird Box and now we’re finally returning to that dangerous world where people must blindfold themselves to stay safe from entities that will force them to commit suicide if witnessed. Netflix is officially expanding the franchise with the upcoming film Bird Box Barcelona.

As the title suggests, the new story will take place in Spain and includes a Spanish cast and creators. Álex Pastor and David Pastor return to Netflix after directing the 2020 Spanish thriller The Occupant with this new film they co-wrote and co-directed.

Brought to us by the producers behind the global phenomenon that was the 2018 film Bird Box Barcelona follows Sebastian (Mario Casas) as he navigates the dangerous streets of Barcelona in search of other survivors.

The upcoming Netflix thriller will be released on Friday, July 14, 2023.

Is Bird Box Barcelona based on a book?

The original movie was based on Josh Malerman’s novel of the same name. While there is a sequel novel titled Malorie, this movie appears to be taking Malerman’s source material and going in a different direction, so it’s not directly based on a book but is set in the world Malerman created.

Here is the plot synopsis from Netflix:

"From the producers of the global phenomenon, Bird Box, comes BIRD BOX BARCELONA, an expansion of the film that riveted audiences in 2018. After a mysterious force decimates the world’s population, Sebastian must navigate his own survival journey through the desolate streets of Barcelona. As he forms uneasy alliances with other survivors and they try to escape the city, an unexpected and even more sinister threat grows."

The cast includes Mario Casas, Georgina Campbell, Alejandra Howard, Naila Schuberth, Diego Calva, Patrick Criado, Lola Dueñas, Gonzalo De Castro, Michelle Jenner, and Leonardo Sbaraglia.

Will Sandra Bullock be in the new Bird Box movie?

Sandra Bullock is an A-list star and top talent who led the cast of the 2018 film. But it’s unlikely she will appear in this film. That said, I wouldn’t be surprised if there were references or easter eggs to the first movie.
