It’s been a long time since Bridgerton fans had new content to fawn over, since we’re still waiting for season 3 to grace our screens. But Netflix gave fans a new chapter of the story with the prequel limited series Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story.
The series centers on the Regency romance series’ glamorous young queen, played by India Amarteifio, as she marries King George (Corey Mylchreest) and becomes the confident role we have come to love on Bridgerton. Queen Charlotte also gives us background on young Lady Danbury and young Violet Bridgerton.
Throughout the limited series, Charlotte grapples with the weight of both her marriage and the newness of becoming the queen. In the current Bridgerton timeline, she’s demanding an heir from her children. So, what happens with Charlotte and George and their brood in the end? And what becomes of Lady Danbury’s romances? Let’s dive into the ending!
WARNING: Major spoilers ahead from Queen Charlotte’s finale!
Do Bridgerton’s Queen Charlotte and King George stay together?
If you’ve watched Bridgerton, then you know Queen Charlotte and King George would end up together in the prequel series. Even with that knowledge, the rocky beginnings of their relationship left us with the question of how they would stay together considering they faced an uphill battle from the day they got married.
Charlotte and George spend most of the early days of their marriage apart in different homes, which we come to learn was because George suffered from a mental illness he wanted to keep from both Charlotte and the world. He believed if he remained in his observatory and tended to his farm, he would remain himself and Charlotte wouldn’t have to see his bad days.
Their relationship goes through different phases throughout the six episodes, but ultimately, Charlotte and George can’t deny that they have fallen deeply in love with each other. She stops his torturous treatment and sticks by his side, forever, standing up to his mother, the crown, and anyone who dares get in their way. In the final sequence, in Charlotte’s present day, she joins George under their bed, just like they had years prior. Good luck not crying!
Do Queen Charlotte’s children have an heir?
While young Charlotte is being pressured to produce an heir to keep George’s royal line going, in her present day, Charlotte pressures her own dozen-plus children to produce an heir, spurred on by Lady Whistledown’s writings. She’s fed up that none of her children have gotten married and had a legitimate heir. (There’s lots of illegitimate children from various affairs, but that won’t do for the queen.)
Charlotte criticizes her children for being of a certain age and still not settling down and doing their royal duties. To their credit, her children do try to follow through with her request, but as they say, it’s easier said than done. Finally, in the end, Prince Edward marries Victoria and tells his mother that they are expecting a baby, which they think will be a girl. When Charlotte shares the good news with George, under the bed, they relish in not his line, their line, continuing on.
Who does Lady Danbury end up with in Queen Charlotte?
When we meet Lady Danbury in Bridgerton, she’s a single and very powerful woman. In Queen Charlotte, we meet the younger version of her (played by Arsema Thomas) who is in a seemingly loveless marriage to Lord Danbury (Cyril Nri). He’s older, a little unkempt, and uses her for sex. Together, they share four children.
After Lord Danbury dies, Lady Danbury struggles with the titles that had been given to her family, as well as the house and land that came with them. Her son ultimately takes the title of Lord Danbury from his father. While mourning her husband, Lady Danbury has two suitors come her way: Lord Ledger (Violet’s father) and Adolphus (Charlotte’s brother).
While she and Lord Ledger share a passionate experience together, they don’t end up together. In the current timeline, Violet discovers that her father and Lady Danbury were each other’s one that got away. Lastly, Adolphus proposes marriage to Lady Danbury, which means moving away and producing his heirs in his homeland. She turns him down, saying she doesn’t want to marry anyone, and remains in England.
