Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story episode 5 recap: Gardens in Bloom

The fifth episode opens in the present time with Queen Charlotte, Lady Danbury, and Violet Bridgerton at an opera house. While Charlotte watches the show, Lady Danbury and Violet gossip about her and her love life.

After the opening finishes, the episode cuts to a flashback of the past. Members of the ton attend Lord Danbury’s funeral. Later that night, Lady Danbury speaks to Coral about her struggle dealing with the loss of Lord Danbury. The next morning, Princess Augusta, Lord Bute, and a royal physician meet with Charlotte at Buckingham House. After examining Charlotte, the doctor announces that she is pregnant. Augusta then tells Charlotte that she’s moving in to watch over her and the baby.

We find out later that Charlotte has been sending George letters, but George hasn’t been reading them because he’s not allowed to while doing treatments. At the Danbury’s Estate, Lady Danbury is visited by Lord and Lady Smythe-Smith, the Duke of Hastings, and other people from her side. They’re all concerned that they’ll lose their titles now that Lord Danbury has died. They ask Lady Danbury if her four-year-old son will be the new Lord Danbury, but she doesn’t have an answer. So, she writes a solicitor to get an answer.

Later, Charlotte has Brimsley deliver a letter to her brother Adolphus but Brimsley asks Reynolds for his advice first. Reynolds tells him to deliver the letter, so he reluctantly does. Back at the Danbury Estate, Lady Danbury decides to leave the estate to go for a walk. After walking through the fields, Lady Danbury decides to take a break and sit on a bench outside of a shed. Lord Ledger suddenly approaches her and they have a bonding moment. The conversation ends with Lord Ledger telling Lady Danbury that he’ll meet with her in the same place the next day.

Then, the episode cuts to the present where Queen Charlotte introduces two of her sons to princesses. After the princesses leave, Charlotte tells her sons that they will be married to them soon. Elsewhere, Lady Danbury and Violet Bridgerton visit an art gallery. In so many words, Violet explains to Lady Danbury that she’s sexually frustrated and wants to start dating again. Embarrassed about what she’s just confessed, Violet makes up an excuse to leave.

Back in the past, Lady Danbury continues to meet up with Lord Ledger and they grow closer and closer. In one of their meet-ups, they’re about to kiss but Lord Ledger stops himself before it could happen. He leaves afterward. In the present, Lady Danbury visits the shed where she use to meet with Lord Ledger and she reminiscences about the past.

Back in the past, Adolphus meets with Charlotte at Buckingham House. Charlotte tells Adolphus that she’s pregnant before asking him to take her back to Germany. But Adolphus refuses to do so because contracts between his province and the British Empire have already been signed. Elsewhere, Lady Danbury meets with a solicitor. The conversation ends with Lady Danbury finding out that Lord Danbury pretty much left her with nothing. Unfortunately, the solicitor wasn’t able to give her a definite answer on if Lord Danbury’s title will be passed down to her son either.

Meanwhile, Charlotte is becoming more and more depressed as she goes through her pregnancy alone. Brimsley notices this and tries to get Reynolds to tell George about her condition. Although Reynolds tells Brimsley that he can’t help, he does end up trying to tell George but is stopped by Dr. Monro’s men before he can.

In the present, Lady Danbury and Violet Bridgerton meet up again. Lady Danbury thanks Violet for being open with her earlier. She tells Violet that it’s okay to want to date again and be physically intimate with someone. Lady Danbury even confesses to Violet that she has those urges too at times.

In the past, Lady Danbury takes her son to meet Princess Augusta and the councilors. She introduces her son as Lord Danbury, but they dismiss her. At the Ledger’s estate, Lord Ledger makes a birthday hat for Lady Danbury. Violet asks him who the hat is for and he tells her it’s for a friend.

Once Lady Danbury arrives back at her estate, she finds out from Coral that Charlotte is waiting for her. Charlotte basically asks Lady Danbury if she can stay at her place, but Lady Danbury knows that wouldn’t be a good idea. So, she has Coral send a footman to Buckingham House to let Charlotte’s staff know where she is.

Lady Danbury tells Charlotte that Brimsley and Adolphus are outside the estate, but Charlotte refuses to see them. After she shares with Charlotte some encouraging words, Charlotte then decides to leave. Adolphus thanks Lady Danbury for helping his sister and then leaves as well. Back in the present, the royal weddings of two of Charlotte’s sons take place.

Then, the episode cuts to the past. Charlotte decides to go see her husband at Kew. There, she discovers George being tortured by Dr. Monro and his men. She orders them to stop and leave. She also dismisses Dr. Monro. Then, Charlotte tells her staff to pack up her things at Buckingham House and bring them to Kew because that’s where she’s going to be staying from now on.

Elsewhere, Lord Ledger shows up at the Danbury Estate to give Lady Danbury the birthday hat he made for her. This leads to them having sex. Then, it cuts to the present. The episode ends with Lady Danbury looking through her things and finding that same birthday hat. She puts it on and then smiles.
