Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story episode 4 recap: Holding the King

The fourth episode picks up where the third episode left off. Charlotte and Reynolds clean George since he’s dirty from being outside in the garden. Charlotte asks Reynolds what’s wrong with George, but he refuses to tell her. Meanwhile, George is still out of it.

Then, the episode cuts to a flashback of the day George finds out that he is to be married. Princess Augusta summons George and tells him she found him a wife named Sophia Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. She also tells him that Charlotte is on a ship headed to London at that very moment. George starts to have a mental breakdown and Augusta tells her councilors to leave the room. After everyone leaves the room, Augusta calms George down.

Later, Augusta brings in a mysterious doctor by the name of John Monro to treat George. Dr. Monro uses unconventional methods to treat his patients. He believes George’s condition has something to do with his nervous system. However, it’s unclear if this is actually true.

Then, we cut to Charlotte and George’s wedding day. Obviously, we saw this play out in the first episode. But now, we get to see it from George’s point of view. Before George finds Charlotte in the garden, he runs into Dr. Monro. George tells Dr. Monro he’s not ready to be married since he isn’t cured yet, but Dr. Monro disagrees with him. Dr. Monro slaps George in an attempt to get him out of whatever mental state he’s in and it works.

After the wedding is over and George drops Charlotte off at Buckingham House, he tells Reynolds to meet him in his observatory. We find out George’s true feelings toward Charlotte in this scene. George wants to be with Charlotte, but he doesn’t want to hurt her. He tells Reynolds that he won’t be living at Buckingham House with Charlotte in order to protect her from himself.

Later, George invites Dr. Monro over to his observatory and tells him that he needs something to end his fits for good. Dr. Monro tells George that he can help him, but he would need permission to pursue more extreme methods. George agrees and then he begins the new treatments during his honeymoon. Remember that during this time Charlotte is bored at Buckingham House.

The next scenes we already watched in previous episodes, but we get to see the scenes play out from George’s point of view instead of Charlotte’s this time. In a new scene, George tells Dr. Monro that he doesn’t need to be treated by him anymore because all he needs is his wife. Then, we cut to the night Charlotte discovers George writing on the bedroom wall. We find out what triggered George’s fit. After George finds out from Dr. Monro that Charlotte is pregnant, he immediately has a fit. Then, the entire scene plays out again.

The next morning, George wakes up naked in an empty bed. Meanwhile, Charlotte meets with Princess Augusta to confront her about George’s condition and the lies. As they argue, George secretly listens from outside the room. Saddened by what he hears, George walks away from the door and visits Dr. Monro. The episode ends with George basically telling Dr. Monro that he wants to continue the treatments.
