The Nurse episode 4 recap: The Night Shift
In the final episode of The Nurse, Pernille prepares to do whatever it takes to catch Christina in the act, including documenting everything with photographic evidence. As the shift begins, Pernille immediately feels nervous, like Christina is onto her and watching her every mood.
It doesn’t take long for things to go downhill. One patient, Viggo, quickly goes into cardiac arrest and dies just after Pernille notices something amiss with his IV and takes it for further inspection. A little bit later, another patient named Anne Lise also dies. Pernille is disturbed because both patients were DNR, meaning Christina doesn’t get her usual glory of trying to “save” them. She’s gone off the deep end.
A third patient dies, and Pernille feels the pressure to catch Christina in the act. There is a fourth patient on their shift, Maggi. Pernille notice that Maggi’s alarm has been paused. She rushes into the room, and this time she catches Christina administering something and trying to hide two syringes. Moments later, the alarm goes off, but when the doctor and Christina rush into the room, the doctor is confused because nothing is wrong with Maggi’s heart.
Pernille suspects that Christina panicked when she came in and triggered the alarm too early. The doctor looks at Maggi’s CT scans and notices a mass in her brain, believing it to be brain damage. But upon further inspection, he realizes it’s just from an old injury. They rush back into the room to give Maggi oxygen. Pernille administers the antidote to diazepam and Maggi recovers.
Now that Pernille actually saw Christina trying to kill Maggi, she tells Niels, and together they go to the cops, who then arrest Christina. It becomes the biggest murder case in Danish healthcare history. One year later, in 2016, Arne’s brother Kenny returns to the hospital to thank Pernille for what she did.
A final card tells viewers what happened during the real case. The Nurse was based primarily on Pernille’s testimony. The real Christina Aistrup Hansen was charged with the murder of three patients and the attempted murder of one. She was sentenced to life in prison, though her sentence was commuted to 12 years in prison. Maggi is still alive, as is Arne’s brother Kenny. Pernille is still working at the Nykøbing Falster Hospital.
