Sweet Tooth season 2 episode 5 recap: What It Takes

The fifth episode starts with a flashback of Jepperd working as a Last Man, capturing hybrids and handing them off to the higher-ups in the organization. He talks to the coach who helped him enlist and demands he help him get answers on his wife and kid’s whereabouts. Then, we cut to the present time.

The engine of the truck Jeppered in goes out, so he grabs tools from the back and leaves the truck behind. At the preserve, General Abbot attempts to put fear in Gus by cutting off one of his antlers. He has him escorted back to the pump house afterward. While in the pump house, Gus is consoled by the others. Now, Wendy and the other hybrids are back on his side.

At Adi’s lab, Adi does a routine check-up on Rani before he prepares for his presentation later that day. But when he tries to make a new dose of the cure, a virus is detected. This means the cure didn’t work. Adi begins panicking, but Rani calms him down. She tells Adi that during the presentation, he should tell the truth about there not being a cure. She explains that if the three find out that there never was a cure, Abbot will be in big trouble and there will be absolute chaos. She tells Adi that during this time, they’ll be able to escape. Adi listens to Rani and agrees to go through with her plan.

As Bear and Jordan do their first mission, Bear bumps into an old frenemy, Tiger. Bear finds out from Tiger that the Animal Army plans to storm the zoo and rescue hybrids. Tiger asks Bear why she’s going to the zoo and Bear tells her that she’s going to rescue Gus. Then, Jordan appears out of nowhere and hits Tiger with his weapon knocking her out.

Back at the Preserve, the three begin to arrive for the presentation. The three is made up of the warlords: Dutch, Voss, and Zhang. Meanwhile, the hybrids start their escape plan. Then, we cut to a flashback to when Jepperd was searching for his family. He meets another Last Man who gives him a bag. Jepperd opens the bag to find his wife’s skull, meaning she died. However, it’s unclear if his son is dead too. Then, we cut to the present time and Jepperd has finally made it to Essex Zoo.

As Adi gives his presentation, he decides not to tell the truth. Instead, he ensures the three that there is a cure, but there’s just not enough of it. He was about to reveal that hybrids are being killed to make the cure, but Abbot cuts him off. Abbot then has his guards bring out a model of a housing development called “Evergreen.” He explains that only a select number of people will be able to live there. He offers the three a place at Evergreen and some of their people, but none of them like the offer. Abbot then explains that with all of their combined resources, it’ll be a fully functioning city. Now, the three accept Abbot’s proposal.

Back at the pump house, the hybrids capture a guard and then run out the door. As they make their way around the Preserve, they notice smoke in the air and run to hide. The smoke came from Jepperd discharging a flare gun at the bus border.

Eventually, Gus splits from the other hybrids as he runs away from a guard. Somehow he finds himself in the building where the presentation is taking place. Gus tells the three that he and other hybrids are being killed to make the cure. Obviously, Abbot doesn’t like this so he orders his guards to take him away. But Johnny helps Gus escape. With this information, the three decide not to accept Abbot’s offer.

As the three begin to leave the Preserve, Abbot hops in Zhang’s car to convince her to join him in making Evergreen happen. Zhang agrees to his proposal but under one condition. She demands that all of her family get to live at Evergreen. Abbot accepts and then Zhang tells him that they don’t need Voss or Dutch because she has all the resources they could ever need. Then, she has her people kill them.

At the bus border, Jepperd has lured some of the Last Men and asks for a trade. He explains to the Last Men that if they give him Gus, he will give them all of the details about the upcoming attack by Aimee and the Air Lords. However, a deal is never made because Jepperd is taken away by guards after attacking them.

As Gus continues to run away from the guards, he eventually finds himself in the same room where Jepperd is being held prisoner. He and Jepperd reunite and share a sweet moment. The episode ends with Aimee and the Air Lords finally arriving at the Preserve.
