Sweet Tooth season 2 episode 2 recap: Into the Deep Woods

The second episode of Sweet Tooth season 2 opens with a flashback to the early days of the Great Crumble. We find out how Jepperd joined the Last Men. Jepperd returns to his home after searching tirelessly for his wife and kid. Now at his breaking point and extremely desperate to find his family, he decides to attend a meeting of the Last Men.

He asks the leader, who is his old football coach if he can join the group. Jepperd tells the coach that he wants answers and to find his family. The coach promises Jepperd that by joining the Last Men, they’ll help him find his wife and kid. As the coach puts his hand out to shake hands with Jepperd, Jepperd zones out and begins to hear Gus calling his name.

Then, Jepperd suddenly wakes up from a dream. He was dreaming of when he first joined the Last Men. Jepperd looks around and sees Aimee. They get to know one another before deciding to team up to rescue their kids and the other hybrids from the Preserve. As Aimee talks through her plan, she hears Wendy’s voice on her radio. Remember, Wendy thought she didn’t get through to Aimee, but it looks like she did. After hearing Wendy’s voice, Aimee wants to answer right away but Jepperd stops her and tells her how risky it is. Initially, Aimee wanted to go through with their plan at midnight, but now with the call from Wendy, she decides to start now.

Once Aimee leaves, Jepperd takes Gus’s stuffed animal and follows after her. As Aimee makes her way through the Preserve disguised as a Last Man, she’s stopped by an actual member. But luckily for Aimee, Jepperd shows up also disguised as a Last Man and saves her.

Jepperd and Aimee continue to search for the hybrids but are stopped again by the same Last Men member. They engage in a fight with the member, and it ends with Aimee knocking him over the head with a shovel. But then another Last Men member notices his colleague knocked out on the ground and sounds the alarm. Now, everyone in the Preserve is after Jepperd and Aimee so they have to leave and try to save the kids at a later date.

But before leaving, Jepperd drops Gus’s stuffed animal “Dog” in a bag of kibble, hoping that it’ll get to him. This way, Gus will know that Jepperd tried to save him. As we saw in the first episode, the stuffed animal does make its way to Gus. Back in the pump room, Gus and the other hybrids prepare for Aimee and Jepperd to rescue them. Meanwhile, Bear makes her way to the place where Gus was captured and finds Jepperd’s bloody jacket, Gus’s photo of Birdie, and his book. She then walks off.

Back at the Preserve, Adi shows Rani their new room. He also shares with Rani that he might be close to finding out where the hybrids came from and then he leaves to go back to work. Johnny arrives at the pump house and takes Gus away. He brings him to a room filled with purple flowers. Adi speaks to Gus from another room on a speaker. He explains to Gus that the pollen in the flowers has a hallucinogen effect on hybrids. Adi hopes that once Gus becomes hypnotized, he’ll begin to remember where he came from.

Initially, Gus doesn’t want to go through with Adi’s experiment, but then Adi tells him that if he doesn’t help, he’ll have to start taking his friends again. The experiment ultimately ends with Adi finding out that Gus was made at Fort Smith Labs and that’s where the virus was created.

Outside the Preserve, Jepperd and Aimee decide to leave the city to go find help in rescuing the hybrids. Jepperd tells Aimee he has friends that were former Last Men who can help them out. But their journey doesn’t start off easy because they have to first escape a drone sent by the Last Men. Meanwhile, the hybrids still hold hope that they will be rescued soon. Well, that’s until they hear on the intercom that the truck Jepperd and Aimee are in has fled the city. With this sad news, they realize they will have to find a way to escape themselves.

Elsewhere, Rani becomes curious about hybrids after finding out from Johnny that hybrids are also being held hostage at the Preserve. Meanwhile, in the middle of nowhere, Bear hitches a ride from a family of travelers. The episode ends with Gus arriving back at the pump house, and telling the other hybrids that once they escape, they’ll go to Yellowstone Park.
