Sweet Tooth season 2 episode 1 recap: In Captivity

The first episode of the season opens with a mysterious person trudging through the snow with a sled of items. The person is revealed to be Birdie a couple of seconds later. Birdie stops in her tracks, looks at her map, and smiles. She’s found the cave she was looking for.

After she drops down into the cave, Birdie finds a ship with purple flowers all over it. As she walks on the ship’s deck, the floor collapses and Birdie falls to the bottom portion of the ship. She looks around and notices the decomposed body of a hybrid holding a journal up against the wall. After taking the journal, Birdie is suddenly pulled back up by the rope around her body. When she exits the cave, she sees footprints in the snow, meaning a mysterious someone had pulled her back up out of the cave. The episode then cuts to the title card.

After the title card goes away, it cuts to the Preserve which is now run by General Abbot and the Last Men. Gus, Wendy, and other hybrids are being held captive in the pump house of the Essex County Zoo. Wendy introduces Gus to her hybrid friends: Haley, Bobby, JoJo Raccoon, Junior, Anna and Hanna, Earl, Maya, Finn, Otto, Max, Teddy, and Roy. She explains to Gus that Roy was taken away by Last Men the night before for unknown reasons.

Then, we cut to another area at the Preserve. Rani wakes up from a bad dream to see Adi giving her a dose of the “secret sauce” to make her feel better for the time being. Adi tells Rani that General Abbot has given him his own lab and that he’s been working nonstop to find a cure. Before being forcefully taken away, Adi gives Rani a Ganesh statue.

Adi then bumps into General Abbot who informs him that there’s a deadly new wave of the Sick wiping out humanity. General Abbot also tells Adi that he’ll be gone for a couple of days on a trip and expects him to have found a cure by the time he gets back. He doesn’t allow Adi to give Rani any more shots until he produces a cure either. Before leaving, General Abbot leaves his brother Johnny in charge of the Preserve.

Back in the pump room, Gus explains to the other hybrids how he got caught. JoJo Raccoon then comes up with a plan to get them out of the pump room. They believe that if they can call Aimee on the radio, then she might be able to rescue them. They use Bobby to get keys to the radio room then Wendy and Gus make their way there. Wendy only gets to speak on the radio for a couple of seconds before a Last Man enters the room. While hiding, Wendy and Gus look behind them to see a seemingly dead Roy inside a container filled with water.

Wendy gets up and tries to use the radio again but is stopped by Johnny. He takes them back to the pump room. In the pump room, Wendy and Gus explain to the other hybrids that they weren’t able to reach Aimee on the radio. Finn asks if they saw Roy and Wendy tells him that Roy isn’t coming back. After watching the other hybrids’ sad reactions to the news, Gus decides to lie by saying that Roy is alive and escaped.

In Lowlands territory, General Abbot and other Last Men meet with a man named Dutch and his people. Apparently, two other people were supposed to attend the meeting but they didn’t show up to listen to Abbot’s proposal. Dutch tells Abbot that none of them is interested in his proposal and that he should just go home because they will never accept him. Dutch and his people then leave while Abbot and the Last Men watch.

In the pump house, Gus promises Wendy that they’ll all get to leave the Preserve soon. Johnny then enters the room, takes Gus away, and brings him to Adi’s lab. Gus refuses to talk to Adi at first. But he begins talking after Adi explains the bad things that will happen to him if he doesn’t answer his questions. After Adi gathers information about Gus, Gus asks Adi what he did to Roy. Without explicitly stating what he did to Roy, it’s obvious that he cut him open and experimented on him. Adi tries to get information out of Gus about his parents, but Gus is unable to give him what he wants.

Then, Gus shares that he was able to see and talk with his dead father after he fell on purple flowers. Adi asks Gus if he can find him again in the purple flowers, but Gus isn’t able to answer him right away because a guard starts banging on the door. The conversation ends with Gus agreeing to help Adi as long as he protects him and his friends. Then, Gus returns to the pump house and lets the other hybrids know that he’s bought them some time.

Later, we cut to the scene where Bear speaks to Birdie on the phone. This scene was shown in the season 1 finale but now we get to see a continuation of their conversation. After Bear realizes she’s speaking to Birdie, she tells her she knows Gus. She also tells Birdie that Richard is no longer with Gus and that he’s now being taken care of by Jepperd. Birdie tells Bear she should start hiding because the phone she’s using has a tracker on it. She also tells Birdie to find a cassette she hid in her attic and give it to Gus. They finish their conversation and then Bear goes to find the cassette tape with the help of Judy.

Last Men are heard banging on the door to the attic as Bear finds the tape. Judy tells Bear to take the tape and give it Gus before exiting the attic. Bear tries to help Judy out, but Judy doesn’t let her. Judy distracts the guards as Bear escapes through a window. But Bear is caught by a Last Man and they both fall off the roof of the house. Although it looks like Bear didn’t survive the fall, she eventually opens her eyes and runs away. We also find out that Birdie is in Alaska.

The episode ends with Gus’s stuffed animal “Dog” being dropped into the pump house by a Last Man. This lets Gus know that Jepperd is still alive. Then, Wendy sniffs Dog and smells Aimee’s scent which means Aimee is with Jepperd. Now, Gus and the other hybrids are very hopeful that they’ll be rescued soon.
